Never been to Gatlinburg Tennessee?

Some rather interesting things to know about this East TN town of Gatlinburg

If you’ve never been to Gatlinburg, Tennessee before, there are some rather interesting things to know about this little town in the far eastern part of the state.  First off, let’s get through the basics.  Nestled at the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this small town of about 3,400 people has the charm usually associated with towns of its size.  However, it has some strange attractions as well.  Did you know that there is a museum dedicated to showcasing salt and pepper shakers?  Nope, not kidding!  The Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum is in Gatlinburg, as is Cooter’s Place in the Smokies, named and styled for the loveable supporting character from “The Dukes of Hazzard” television show.

Ripley’s (of “Believe It or Not” fame) has a cluster of several different attractions in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  In addition to the “Odditorium,” a shrine filled with strange artifacts that typify Ripley’s, there is also a miniature golf center (one of several in town), an aquarium, and an amusement park/family fun center (once again, one of several in town).  It might seem strange for a town of this size in the middle of relatively nowhere to have so many attractions, but due to the national park being nearby, Gatlinburg is somewhat of a tourist destination.

If you’re all worn out from walking through the national park or one of the other various attractions, you might be looking for a place to eat.  Gatlinburg has many different dining options to choose from.  Whether you want a chain restaurant or local fare serving up food like old fashioned Southern barbecue, it’ll be hard for anyone to go home disappointed.  The Smoky Mountain Springfest is a three-month festival of flowers, arts, crafts, and food.  Can’t forget the food!

It might be worth the pilgrimage to Gatlinburg, TN if you haven’t been to the area before.  The national park is the main attraction here, and it’s what the town’s economy is largely built on; however, most visitors don’t limit themselves to just the park.  Even if you’re not going to the national park, there’s still plenty of stuff in and around town to do.  There is even a ski resort nearby for those who just have to hit the slopes.  If you’re wondering why the phrase “ski resort” and “Tennessee” don’t share the same sentence very often, it’s because Ober Gatlinburg is the only ski resort in the entire state.  Through its diversified attraction offerings, Gatlinburg, TN is a fun little town to visit.
