For anyone who believes that heartworm medicine is too expensive then there is a cheaper alternative. Generic heartworm medicine is worth considering for anyone on a budget or who simply does not want to buy branded medications.

Heartworm medicine can be expensive, especially now that the heartworm society of America recommends giving a monthly preventative all year round. This can add up to a considerable sum for many pet owners, especially for those of us who have more than one animal (three Dogs and a Cat in my case).

What Is Generic Heartworm Medicine

When a product first comes to the market it will have to have passed many strict tests to ensure that it is safe, effective and fit for the purpose. The pharmaceutical industry is especially strict and all new medications are thoroughly tested. This costs money and in some cases takes years to recoup. This means that when the product is available to the public the costs incurred are reflected in the overall price.

For heartworm medicine the active ingredient in many is Ivermectin. If a company wishes to produce a cheap product they can simply now sell the Ivermectin in tablet form without having to incur the costs of the initial testing etc. They don't have a history as a branded product like the initial company that brought out the product but they can sell it very cheaply.

Ivermectin is in a number of generics, the best known being Valuheart. If you want to purchase generic heartworm medicine than this is probably the best choice. It is cheap for a six month supply but works just as well as the other medications available. It maynot come in such fancy packaging, and it certainly will not be flavored like Heartgard is, but it will prevent heartworm for Dogs just as effectively.

If you want to look after your pets health and ensure they do not get the adult stages of heartworms then generic heartworm medicine is a very good choice, especially if funds are somewhat low. The fact is that it will work just as well but for half the price. It should never be seen as an inferior product, it is just a little less fancy and has not been branded in the same way.

My advice is always that a generic is preferable to no treatment. If there is a matter of a generic or no treatment then spending a small amount on generic heartworm medicine is definitely the way to go.
