Get Motivated to Drum

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

If you are a drummer then you will - at one time or another - enter a slump. This is when your motivation to drum is low and you'll often find yourself not playing the drums for weeks on end. Getting excited about drumming is important to keep playing, to keep the skill you have and to continue to improve. Too many drummers stay away from their drums for months at a time only to return later to regret the time they have wasted. Here are some suggestions to keep you motivated about drumming.

1. Find inspiration. This could be from listening to music, watching famous drummers on video or playing with a great drummer. The more you immerse yourself in the world of drumming the more you will find motivation to play yourself. Seeing and listening to great drummers will make you want to practice so that you can be like them. Modelling these types of players is also a great way to learn and increase you skill level.

2. Purchase a new piece of hardware. One of the best ways to get motivated is to buy a new drum set, cymbal or other piece of hardware. You will want to play your drums to try it out. If cost is an issue then look into cheap drum sets. There are plenty of new or used drum sets that you can buy at cheap prices.

3. Get some gigs. If you are in a band, getting plenty of gigs you will keep you motivated and keep you practicing. There is nothing more motivating than the prospects of appearing in front of a crowd. Your other bands members will also keep things stimulating and can push people to practice.

4. Set goals. A goal could be simple as playing for five minutes every second night. Or even just sitting in front of your drums for 1 minute doing nothing. While these types of goals seem a little silly, just getting in front of your drums can make you feel like playing. While you might aim to play for five minutes, by the time you get into it you'll probably play for an hour or more. These types of goals also put less pressure on you and don't make you feel bad when you really don't want to play.

5. Take lessons. Even if you are experience, lessons are a great way to discover new approaches, techniques and viewpoints that you may never have even thought about. They can also be great social situations and surrounding yourself with people with the same interest in drumming can kick-start your motivation.
