Get Rid of Pigeons Without Going Crazy

By Edited Jun 17, 2014 1 3

If you live in a town or city, chances are you have been annoyed at times by birds. Although some people are lucky enough to find it is a mere distraction, others are so annoyed by birds that they have trouble sleeping. Depending on which part of the world you live in, the type of bird that is causing trouble may differ. In some locations, crows and ravens can be extremely annoying. In other spots, pigeons are the ones that are making all the ruckus. In fact, many people blame the pigeons for ruining their night's sleep. The reason for this is because pigeons are active at the crack of dawn, which is exactly time when you need to get a little more rest. They can really annoy you with their nonstop noises. Here's what you need to know to get rid of pigeons.

Although different people use different methods for keeping these birds at bay, there are few products

that work better than others. One of the most common things that people try is to get a strip of plastic bird spikes. These work quite well in many locations, because they prevent the pigeons from comfortably standing where they normally rest. The problem with these spikes though, is that they only work well on narrow places like railings, awnings, and ledges. If you want to know how to get rid of pigeons in a larger area such as your entire balcony or your porch, you may need to try a different method altogether.

For larger areas such as the ones mentioned above, a product such as a decoy might be your best choice. You can get a decoy that comes in the shape of a hawk or an owl. The way they work is that they disguise themselves as an actual predator, and the birds are very frightened of them. Some of them even move and make realistic noises, just like the actual birds would make. For spots like vegetable gardens and porches, this may be your best option.

The best thing about them is that they are very inexpensive, and you can get a very good one for around $30. If you don't even have that much money to spend, you can get a very simple one for about 10 bucks. For a large area, this is almost definitely going to be your most inexpensive option. If you are working with a very small and well defined space, a strip of bird spikes might work out to be cheaper.

A decoy does work, but you have to move it around every few days to be realistic. Great article!

I never knew that people actually would want to get rid of pigeons. But then I am living in the country. Another reason I can think one may want to get rid of pigeons would be because they eat pet food as well. If that is the case then $30 is cheap as a once off expense and you can save quite a lot on pet food in the long run.

I used to live in an apartment in Taiwan that had pigeons living on the balcony. They woke us up every morning, and when summer came along and I fired up the old A/C, all these pigeon feathers came out!!! They made a nest on the A/C.
