Not only can they affect your appearance but they can create emotional and social issues so why not get rid of your acne scars once and for all. With all the options available from outpatient surgery to natural remedies, there is a way to restore smooth skin and your confidence. Whether you are out looking for a job or going on that first date, your appearance is important. Acne scars can make you self-conscious and reflect in that all important first impression. So let's look at some of the ways to get rid of acne scars.

The first thing is to understand that scarring is the body's natural response to infection. Acne is an infection caused by bacteria that clogs pores. Eliminate any current outbreak of acne through whatever method is working for you. Daily cleansing and acne cream treatments will prepare your skin to be made scar free.

Laser technology has come a long way and is probably the quickest and least invasive method. It is an outpatient procedure. A non-ablative laser is the more popular one used for removal of scars. There is no damage to the skin with visible results in a week. Multiple treatments are needed and this can become costly. The side effects are some redness and swelling that are short lived.

Dermabrasion is an outpatient procedure and is good for light or surface scars. After the skin is numbed and iced, the doctor uses a tool with a wire brush that rubs away the top layers of skin treating small areas at a time. The results take several weeks to look normal as new skin grows over the treated area. There is discomfort afterward and some bleeding.

Chemical peels using salicylic acid penetrate layers of skin removing the scarred tissue and enabling the growth of new skin. The degree of penetration of the skin and number of treatments is determined by the doctor and the desired outcome. Recovery time and discomfort is dependent upon the intensity of the treatment.

Augmentation is the injection of collagen or other material under the scar to bring it to the surface. This treatment is used on scars where there is loss of tissue.

There are many factors that determine the best method to remove acne scars including age, overall health, medical history, type and severity of scar and a person's tolerance to medications and discomfort. Once the best method has been selected, you can begin your journey to smooth, scar free skin.
