Natural, Effective Home Remedies for Shiny Hair

Most women aspire to have silky, shiny hair, which has always been a sign of health, beauty and vitality. If you have dull, lifeless hair, you can improve its appearance by using a few simple home treatments and taking good care of your tresses. You'll be happy to know that you don't have to spend outrageous amounts of money on drugstore products that claim to increase shine. You can also bypass the salons, which offer countless products and costly shine-enhancing, deep-conditioning treatments. A wide range of homemade products, many of which have been used by women across the world for hundreds of years, can provide the same results for far less money. Plus, it's always fun to make your own cosmetics!

Start With Your Diet

Before you begin using any of these home remedies for shiny hair, it's important to take a look at the bad habits that may be causing your lackluster locks. A poor diet is a common cause of dull hair, as many of the essential vitamins and minerals vital to hair health are likely missing. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, nuts and seeds, and cut out the sugar and processed foods. You can find numerous supplements designed to increase the health and growth of hair in your local drugstores and natural health stores. Brewer's Yeast tablets, for example, are thought to improve the health of the hair. When taken as directed, they may put you on the path to shinier hair. However, remember that supplements alone without improving your diet is not likely to have the desired effect.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar makes an excellent shiny hair treatment, as it clarifies and removes product build-up. It also balances the pH balance of the scalp, which can help improve overall hair health and increase shine. To use, simply combine about 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar with 8 oz. of pure water and keep the mixture in a bottle in the shower. Use the vinegar-water as a final rinse after shampooing and rinsing your hair as usual. Use up to three times a week for the best results. You should notice an improvement right away, and your hair will become healthier with continued long-term use.

Honey Treatment

Although it sounds messy, honey is actually one of the best natural treatments for shiny hair and overall hair health. It coats each strand and moisturizes from the inside out. Honey may lighten your hair over time, however, so you may want to avoid repeated use if you have dark hair. To use, gently massage about ¼ cup of pure honey into your scalp, then work through to the ends of your hair. Make sure you do this in the bathroom or kitchen to avoid making a mess. Allow the honey to remain in your hair for about 30 minutes, then shampoo and rinse as usual. Repeat up to twice a week for the best results.

Other Shiny Hair Treatments

There are dozens more ways to get shiny hair at home, but here are some of the most popular and easy to perform. Try them all and see which one works best for you:

  • Fruit Treatment – Combine ½ banana, ½ an avocado and a few tablespoons of plain, whole yogurt in a blender or food processor. Apply to your hair, thoroughly coating all strands, and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and shampoo if necessary. Repeat up to three times a week. Both banana and avocado deep-condition the hair and leave it shiny and healthy.

  • Lavender Essential Oil – Combine 2 to 3 drops lavender essential oil with a tablespoon of olive oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp and through to the ends of your hair. Cover with a towel, and leave the mixture on for 20 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual. Lavender stimulates the scalp and olive oil adds shine to your hair.

  • Beer for Shiny Hair – Rinse your hair with warm beer after shampooing. Even the cheap stuff works to increase shininess. Don't worry about your hair smelling like beer, as the smell dissipates quickly. If it really bothers you, rinse again with tepid water after the beer rinse.

Shiny Hair Tips

In addition to diet, exercise and homemade shine treatments, you can also get temporarily shiny hair by polishing with a hair polisher, using a hair straightener (make sure to use a heat protecting product first to avoid causing excess damage), or using a hair gloss or glaze treatment. You can typically find glosses and glazes at drugstores fairly inexpensively. Follow the package directions for the best results. However, in most cases, simply applying olive oil, mayonnaise, honey or mashed avocado to your hair and letting it stand for half an hour will accomplish the same thing as these commercial products.
