People who struggle with a bad credit rating usually have large amounts of credit card debt. Credit card debt is the worst kind of debt you can have because it is unsecured and the interest rates are very high. Having a large amount of credit card debt will usually mean very high monthly payments. People who are paying the minimum amount will usually find it near impossible to get out of credit card debt.

There are some different systems that are designed to help people get out of bad credit card debt. Depending on the system that you choose to use, it may affect your credit rating. Even though your credit rating may be hurt, people who are in serious credit card debt should still get outside assistance to help them eliminate their debt.

The two main types of credit debt relief that you can get are credit counseling and debt settlement programs. Each of these programs have their advantages and disadvantages. It is up to you to find out which one works the best for you.

People who are looking to consolidate their debt into a single lump sum should consider credit counseling. Credit counseling is perfect for people who have large amounts of high interest rate credit cards and are looking to put it into a low interest rate monthly payment. Instead of making multiple payments every month you only have to focus on making a single payment that will cover all of your debts. Credit counselors can negotiate with your creditors on your behalf to take steps to reduce your interest rates and eliminate any late payment fees.

Debt settlement programs have a much different approach to solving credit card debt. Using debt settlement, you let your account fall into default. Once your account has defaulted you then negotiate with the lenders the amount that you can afford to pay back. You can sometimes get your debt reduced by up to 50% using this method. This method is perfect for people who are looking for ways to reduce the actual amount of debt they owe.

Your financial position at the time will determine weather you choose to use a debt settlement program or a credit counselor. Both programs can help you get out of credit card debt, but one will decrease your interest rate while the other actually decreases the debt amount. You should keep in mind that debt settlement does hurt your credit rating more than credit counseling.

It seems that more and more people are falling into trouble with credit cards. I was one of them, although it was quite a few years ago. This is a good article.
