Diamonds are made in different grades, the higher the grade of your diamond, the more valuable it is. In addition, diamonds may be used with gold, a precious metal that can be wore by most people. To select the right engagement ring, you will need to choose the stone, shape, setting, styledesign, size and type of metal to use, for your ring. Clarity refers to the level of blemishes or flaws inon diamonds, the less they are the more valuable your diamond is. Diamonds have various colors too colorless diamonds are usually more expensive than others are. The cut of a diamond define how well it sparkles. Carat (ct) is the unit of measurement for weight, for diamonds. Diamonds come in different shapes and these include, pear (teardrop) shaped diamonds, heart-shaped, emerald, marquise (oval with pointed ends), radiant, trilliant (triangular shaped), oval, round and so on. The setting of your diamond ring holds the gemstone(s) in place, some diamond settings include pave, channel, bezel, prong and invisible settings, designed in different waysstyles to hold your gems. You will want a setting that will not easily come loose or that are caught in anything. You may also choose specific designsstyles of rings, depending on your individual preference. Diamond sizes are in carats, though you can get smaller size diamonds, expressed in points, 100 points is 1 carat or 0.01 carat. Knowing the weight of your diamond can save you some money. For example, a 2 carat diamond engagement ring may be bigger than rings with less carats, but choosing a 1.90 carat diamond ring instead of the 2 carat, will cost you less, and both diamonds may not look different, to the human eye, when they are set. Gold is measured in karats (a karat, kt is the quantity of gold in a mixture of metals). 24K gold is plain gold which is really too soft for every day use, hence, it is usually mixed with other metals for strength. 18K gold contains 18 parts in gold and 6 parts in other metal(s), 12K gold contains 12 parts in gold and 12 parts in other metal(s) and so on. Mixing gold with other metals will give it some other types of colors - white gold (gold mixed with nickel or palladium), pink and rose (gold mixed with copper) and green gold (gold and silver). Some countries may use the word carat and karat interchangeably, and consumers too, may sometimes swap one for the other, especially while searching online, that is, they may search for 18K gold rings or 18ct gold rings (as the case may be), retailers may use either of one these conventions too, either way, you now know what to look for. Always ensure your jeweler is a member of the industry gem association, to avoid buying counterfeits or low-grade diamond rings.
