Getting Better Search Engine Results for Your Website

If you're using a website to promote yourself or product, there are several ways to improve the site's rank in the search engines. Whether your website is just launching or you've been managing it for some time now, organizing how it appears to the search engines is just as important as keeping the site friendly for your audience.

According to PC magazine, the typical site gets 61 percent of all traffic from search engine results, and 41 percent of that comes from Google alone. If you don't know how to optimize your site well you're losing many potential customers.

But sometimes it feels as if the more you read about site optimization, the more confused you become. One web guru may praise a technique that is completely the opposite of what another guru swears by. Which is the best optimization technique? No one really knows since the search engines companies hold their rankings formulas close to the chest, but there are some things every SEO newbie should learn from the start.

Optimize your keywords. This can't be said enough, but many website owners and content writers aren't sure how to approach this in the beginning. The very first thing to ask is what do I want to optimize? What am I selling that people are looking for? Sometimes choosing the right keywords can be easy enough, but what if your site sells more than one product? Or what if the site covers a broad range of topics? How do you know what words to focus on?

Learn what terms people are searching for the most. To learn this, use a keyword tool that measures what words are searched the most. Google's Keyword Tool is good, but don't limit yourself. Get the SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool, which can broaden your knowledge of alternate or complimentary keywords the searchers are using, in addition to providing you with an idea of the volume of searches for your terms.

Keyword optimization isn't just about words, it's also about numbers. Site owners need to optimize using terms that are the most applicable, but they should also be terms that will bring the most interested and relevant customers to the site. Don't just write the content and add keywords later; decide on them first and incorporate them into your content writing. Then tweak them afterwards if the results aren't satisfying.

Don't forget about the HTML tag. Title tags should contain the most important words in your optimization effort. As search engines index the internet the words between these tags are the most important when ranking a site. A page title should never be just page 1, or heaven forbid, index. Also, each page should have different words in between these tags. Search engines also consider URL's high on the list, too. Don't use a generic URL, keep looking until you find one that uses your keywords.

Be specific when you put your links out there. When you share your link out on the web, don't just write click here, making the word here the link. Spell out the site name and create the link with the name. Lemons.com will get indexed into the search engine, while the word here is just another random word to any search engine.

Check your spelling. This can't be repeated enough. Spelling errors not only make your site unprofessional, they can also keep the site out of the search engine results based on mispelled terms. If you sell Gucci handbags and misspell Gucci, shoppers looking for those handbags will never find your product. However, if you know that your keyword is often misspelled, you might want to place that word in you metadata keywords in the code of your pages.

Remember, site optimization isn't done once and then forgotten. Site owners must keep watching which pages are getting the hits, where the traffic is coming from, and what keywords are leading the traffic to the site. You might be surprised that it isn't the Gucci bags bringing visitors; instead it's the plush teddy bears. If so, it's time to optimize for teddy bears instead of handbags.
