Getting Rid of Spiders

By Edited Jun 8, 2016 1 2

Most spiders are harmless, but that doesn't take away the "ick" factor! They are creepy, crawly, scary looking insects that make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Many people are afraid of themand certainly don't want them living in their house. I am definitely one of those people.

There are only four-spiders in the United States that are actually a danger to people because they are poisonous. The dangerous, poisonous-spiders are Black Widow Spider, Brown Recluse-Spider, Hobo-Spider and Yellow Sac.

They are very beneficial because they eat other bugs that might make their way into your home. They eat insects on houseplants and garden plants also.

One method, if you are brave enough, that will not work is to pull their legs off and hope they die. That will not work because they re-grow their lost legs.

Natural Spider-Repellants

Use cedar wood chips and cedar wood. They are naturally repelled by cedar wood. Place cedar chips in areas where you have a spider-problem. Visit your local lumber yard and pick up scraps of fresh cedar to keep them away.

Use Cedar Essential Oil. Place a few drops of Cedar Oil on cotton balls, a rag or directly on wood and put them in corners, crawl spaces and basements or where ever your see spiders.

Use Osage Oranges also known as Hedge Apple or Horse Apples. This fruit is non toxic to humans, but spiders hate them. They will not kill spiders, only repel them. 1 or 2 Osage Oranges will keep them out of an entire room. Osage Oranges are available online and in some specialty garden centers.

Buy pennyroyal in health food stores, natural pharmacies and online. Generously sprinkle crushed pennyroyal in spider prone areas and spiders will stay away. Keep away from children, pets and pregnant women. Pennyroyal, especially the oil is highly toxic. This is best used in crawl spaces where people and pets do not frequent.

Leave a few fresh chestnuts around. Spiders will avoid chestnuts.

To Kill

Fill a small spray bottle with hot water.

Add 2 tablespoons of salt.

Allow the salt to dissolve in the hot water.

Spray spiders when you see them.

The spray will take an hour or so to kill a spider.

Essential Oils Spider Killer Spray

Use a large spray bottle.

Add 3 drops of Lavender

3 drops of Tea Tree

2 drops of Cinnamon

2 drops of Citronella

2 drops of Peppermint

2 drops of Cedar

2 drops of Lemon

Fill the rest of the spray bottle with warm water.

Shake to mix.

Spray the spider killer directly on spiders or in areas where you frequently see spiders.

Clearly label the spray bottle with all of the ingredients.

Keep away from children and pets.

Add chewing tobacco, cigarettes or cigarette butts to a large jar.

Pour boiling water over the top.

Allow to steep overnight.

Strain the solids out.

Pour the water into a spray bottle.

Add about 4 ounces of lemon dish washing soap.

Add about 4 ounces of Listerine Mouthwash (original)

Gently shake to mix.

Spray wherever you have a spider problem such as wood piles or sheds or spray directly on spiders.

Clearly label the ingredients on the outside of the spray bottle.

Keep away from children and pets.

Do not spray on Roses, it will cause the Roses to turn black.

This is highly effective on all types of spiders, best used for poisonous spiders.

Re-apply after a rainfall.

If you have an infestation of dangerous or poisonous spiders in or around your home, call a professional exterminator.
