Getting a Top of the Line Mobile - What to Look For

By Edited Feb 13, 2014 0 0

Great Phones for Less

There are some fantastic new mobiles on the market these days, with stunning features. However, these new phones come with huge price tags, costing well over five hundred pounds. If you're looking to buy a new top of the line phone, you're going to want to know that your money is being well spent. So, today we're telling you all about what to look for in a new top end phone, as well as how to get the best deals on some of the bestselling devices. If you're thinking about making a big investment in a new phone, you might want to read this first to make sure that you're really getting your money's worth...

Top of the Line Phones: The Basics...

Whilst all phones are different, with different kinds of features, there are some basic specs that you're really looking for in a true top end device. Most of the top of the line new releases right now are getting huge screen sizes, around the five inch mark (the exception to that rule being the iPhone 5, which still only gets a four inch screen). This big screen means that not only is your viewing experience better, but also that you can type more easily on the on screen keyboard as well as read documents without zooming and scrolling too much. You're also looking for an above average display, so an AMOLED or Retina screen rather than the traditional LCD screen. When it comes to power, you're obviously expecting more from a top end phone. You want at least 1.5 GHz of CPU, an a quad core processor, to give you some hefty speed and the ability to run the most recent software and games. RAM should be over the 1 GB mark, though some models are approaching 2 GB, giving you a responsive device that isn't going to crash or freeze. And finally, internal memory should be a minimum of 16 GB, but the majority of high end models these days are getting 32 GB.

Top of the Line Phones: The Extras...

As well as the basic specs that you're expecting to see, there are also some other things that you'll want to keep an eye out for. 4G capability is fairly standard in top end models, though not all have it. Whether or not you want 4G depends on whether you have access to a 4G network and data plan, but if you do, those super-fast internet speeds are pretty tempting. Cameras are a sticky issue with top of the line phones. Many top end devices are still getting the standard 8 MP cameras that you find on most mid-range phones. However, there is a move towards the bigger 13.7 MP camera, which you can find on a few top end mobiles. If you're into mobile photography, then the higher resolution camera is going to give you much better pictures, with far more fine detail. Other than that, features vary a lot by model. Many Samsung devices these days have smart screens, which are convenient. There are also several robust models, including the Sony Xperia series, which are close to waterproof and have reinforced screens to protect them from accidents.

Top of the Line Right Now...

Obviously, the top of the line range changes frequently as more models are released, but there are some clear favourites on the market right now. The iPhone 5 is the best iPhone, at least until a new model is released later this year. The top of the line Blackberry is the new Z10. For Windows the obvious choice for best model is the new Nokia Lumia 925. When it comes to Android phones, there's a lot more competition at the top of the market. The Samsung Galaxy S4 looks set to become the best phone of the year, but the Sony Xperia Z and the HTC One are giving it a run for its money.

Samsung Galaxy Deals...

Getting deals on top end phones can be tough, they're in high demand so there isn't always an incentive for retailers to offer discounts. However, there are some good Samsung Galaxy deals on the market right now. As the current hot new release, many operators are using the new Samsung Galaxy S4 to lure customers into signing incentive contracts. This means that just at the moment you can get some pretty good Samsung Galaxy deals. Deals range from cash discounts to extra services included in your contract and are well worth taking advantage of if this is the model that you're interested in. Some of the best offers right now are with Three and O2, so check out their web sites for savings on a new Galaxy.

iPhone and Blackberry Deals...

It's a lot harder to find deals on iPhones and Blackberrys than on other devices, simply because each of these mobiles is one of a kind. Only iPhones run iOS and only Blackberrys run RIM, so there's not much competition to keep prices down and make manufacturers offer good deals. Your best bet for getting the best price on either an iPhone or a Blackberry is simply going to be online shopping. You're going to get discounts from most online stores, whether they're dedicated phone sites, major electronic retailer sites or mobile operator sites, because overhead costs of online retail are lower than for physical retail. Use a price comparison web site to make sure that you're getting the best prices that you can find.

Other Top End Deals...

For other phones you're going to have to do a little research to get the best deals, since prices can vary a lot. Check out online shopping, but also look at mobile contracts, and occasionally you'll get the best deal simply by waiting for a high street retailer to have a sale. Nokia models in particular tend to make good refurbished phone buys, so you might want to check out the Nokia web site or a mobile operator's web site to see if there are any refurbished Nokia models on offer.
