Glucosamine Benefits: What is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is found naturally in healthy cartilage. Without sufficient glucosamine, your body can’t build enough cartilage to properly cushion your joints. When this happens, it’s called osteoarthritis.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis. It’s when you start to lose cartilage, which can happen for a variety of reasons: aging, injury, or normal wear and tear.

What Is Cartilage?

Cartilage is the tissue that connects and cushions your joints. The reason osteoarthritis causes pain for so many people is because without enough cartilage in their joints, the bones in their joints end up rubbing against each other. In case you couldn’t guess, bone-on-bone contact does not feel good! I get a shiver just picturing it.

Glucosamine Benefits Osteorthritis: Alternative Arthritis Pain Relief

Randomized, controlled clinical trials have supported the efficacy of using glucosamine to help alleviate osteoarthritis. It is believed that increased intake of glucosamine may help to strengthen the cartilage. Glucosamine has been recommended particularly for osteoarthritis of the knees.

One reason people like to take glucosamine as an arthritis treatment is because glucosamine might actually help stop the progression of the condition. This is not proven, but it makes sense to many people out there. Than taking a pain reliever, like aspirin or ibuprofen, when you experience joint pain, isn’t actually helping you get better. It just hides the pain for few hours. But if glucosamine can help to regrow your cartilage, then not only will it provides arthritis pain relief, but it might help cure you.

How to Take Glucosamine

Studies have shown conflicting reports on the effectiveness of glucosamine. For that reason, it should not be used in place of your normal medical treatment. But it is often used as a supplement to other treatments, such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). To see any improvement, you may have to take glucosamine for several months.

Personally, I have used glucosamine chondroitin for a few months, during which I was regularly performing the Insanity workouts from Beach Body. These workouts are brutal, and involve a lot of jumping up and down, which can be tough on the joints. After a while, I started to feel a little creakiness in my knees; so I started taking glucosamine. Shortly afterward, there was a noticeable difference in my joints. They felt better lubricated, and I attribute it to the glucosamine.
