Glutamine Supplimentation for Health and Muscle Recovery

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

If you are trying to build strength and muscle without using a Glutamine supplement then you're just kidding yourself. When you exercise you are tearing down the muscle tissue that is involved with whatever movement or exercise you are doing. The bodies response to this is to repair that muscle tissue bigger and stronger than before to better resist this form of tearing down the next time it happens. Your skeletal muscles are made up of around 61% Glutamine.

Glutamine is the most plentiful free form amino acid in the human body. A "free form" amino acid is singular molecule. In other words they are not attached to other amino acids so they can be absorbed and utilized right away by your body, maybe as fast as 20 minutes. This is different than amino acids that are bonded together and take 4 to 6 hours to get thru the digestive process! This is important since the best time to start repairing your muscle tissues and priming the muscles for recovery is measured in minutes not hours from the finish of your workout or competition.

This is where amino acids specifically Glutamine or L-Glutamine come in. It is used for both protein metabolism and protein synthesis. Your body may use as much as 50% of its available stores during a single intense workout session. It could take days for your body to replenish this amount from your diet alone especially if you are continuing to workout on a consistent basis. You need to supplement with L-Glutamine to ensure your body has sufficient supplies to perform all the necessary biological functions it is involved in. Some where between 3 and 15 grams daily depending on the amount of activity you pursue. Studies have shown that this amino acid has no ill effects in doses up to 20 grams a day.

Glutamine may even have benefits for your health in other ways. Glutamine is one of the chief energy sources for your immune system. Heavy workouts exhaust your supply of this amino acid because your body uses it to repair muscle tissue and prevent further damage acting as an anti-catabolic agent. This catabolism occurs when other functions of the body rob Glutamine from your immune system. L-Glutamine supplements not only assist you in becoming stronger and healthier but help prevent you from getting sick.
