Gold stock investing does not carry the same value as investing in gold bullion or coins because gold equity bares the same drawbacks and risks as any type of stocks. Basically, you will be investing in a company's stocks which is subject to many more risks than just the price of gold. Where gold will be a safe haven in times of economic crisis, gold stock investing can suffer just as any other stocks.

Some of the factors that affect gold mining and exploration companies include geopolitical turmoil, exploration expenditure, company management and much more. For example, if a company extracts most of its gold in a politically stable country then the price of their shares will be higher since the risks are much lower than mining in a developing country such as China.

Exploration costs have also increased greatly over the last decade or so, in fact they have almost tripled, making it difficult for companies to maintain their margins, especially since the price of gold only goes up during a recession.

Gold stock investing is just as risky as investing in any type of equity and requires you to do the same due diligence as you would before any other investment. You will definitely want to check as many company annual reports as you can and also consider checking out the management of the company and their track records to determine their capacity to keep the company profitable and productive.

Also make sure to check trading charts for any gold stock investing because you want to make sure you are not buying near a historical resistance level because then the chance of the stock prices increasing are close to zero. It's best to either wait for a correction in the price or choose another company to invest in.

Another option for gold stock investing is to go with a mutual fund that invests in gold stocks. This is the best option if you don't have time to analyze each and every company and also provides you with the ability to to spread your portfolio over a number of gold mining companies and thus hedge any losses you may incur from a poor investment decision.

Gold stock investing can be profitable but also carries great risk, therefore it is critical that you have a good understanding of stock trading before you venture into trading. If you are looking for a long term investment then stick to gold trading mutual funds as they are usually run by people who have a lot of experience in gold trading and they also have access to more information, often before it hits the mainstream.
