If you like anime with fight scenes that really get your blood pumping than you are obviously a fan of the action genre. You have indulged in all of the Big Shounen 3 but you find yourself wanting to change things up from the constant repetitive action and reused plots. If you are unfamiliar with what the Big Shounen 3 are, they are Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto. These are the most popular action animes to date. So thus, you will not find them on this list. You will also not find Dragonball Z. While all four of those animes are great action anime series, if you have been an anime fan for any amount of time you will probably have seen them. If you have not and nothing else on this list tickles your fancy, check one of them out!
I have also provided recommendations for action manga well, most of which have very decent animes as well. However, for the sake of variety, I have left them off this particular list.
Nabari No Ou
Miharu Rokujou is apathetic to the world and its problems and tries to keep to himself. He is the powerful carrier of a ninja art known as the "Shinrabanshou" which would enable him to become the ruler of Nabari. It is a skill that many ninja clans wish to remove from his body and possess for themselves. his fellow classmate Kouichi and English teacher Kumohara are ninjas from the Banten clan which are sworn to protect Miharu and the powerful ninja art within him. Miharu has no desire to join them in their ninja "club", however eventually he must in order to be protected from the rival ninja clans.
Nabari No Ou is a great alternative for those that like Naruto. It has the one thing that Naruto lacks--an ending. So that right there gives it extra points. Whereas Naruto is set in a world full of ninja living in a world of their own, Nabari No Ou is set in a modern world where ninjas still exist in secret. It does not have the bright and flashy battles of Naruto, the battles are much more realistic but still encompass the fast paced action of ninja combat.
Set in the imaginary world of Earth Land, which is the most imaginative name for a universe ever, there exists a mysterious and powerful guild of mages known as Fairy Tail. Lucy Heartfilia is a 17 year old girl who has high hopes of becoming a fully-fledged mage in Fairy Tail. She is captured by a sorcerer posing as one of the guild's strongest member, Salamander. However, the real Salamander named Natsu Dragneel, a strange upbeat and cheerful boy, rescues her and offers her invitation into the guild.
In a lot of ways, Fairy Tail is a lot like a combination of Naruto and One Piece. Instead of pirates and ninja fighting about, there is mages and various monsters. It's filled with quite a lot of questing and humor. In my opinion, it is one of the best action animes out there today, though not a lot of people have bothered with it. However, the magic is a unique and inventive style of fighting used in an action anime and it is certainly enough to keep my attention.
Hunter X Hunter
When Gon was a young boy, his father disappeared. His father was one of many people who were called Hunters. These hunters undergo various tasks such as hunting down criminals for bounty. As soon as Gon turned 12, he leaves his home to take the test in order to become a hunter. However this test has a notoriously high failure rate and often times results in death. In the exam he meets and befriends the revenge-driven Kurupika, the to-be-doctor Leorio, and the rebellious ex-assassin Killua. Their friendship helps them get through the exam and overcome the dangers of a career as a hunter.
Hunter X hunter is often overlooked by action fans because of its old style of animation. Even when the anime was remade in 2001, people still ignored it. Perhaps it is the basic old school plot and the whole Yugioh "power of friendship" thing that puts them off. However, Hunter X Hunter is full of blood pumping fights and really quite unique villains.
D. Gray Man
Near the end of the 19th century, an secret organization of Exorcists are fighting a never ending battle against Akuma. These akuma are mechanical being created by the mysterious and powerful Millennium Earl using the suffering souls of the dead. Allen Walker seeks to join these exorcists after being trained with his cursed eye and Anti-Akuma weapon by his master, who is a high ranking exorcist. Along with his fellow exorcists he seeks to stop the Millennium Earl who is working towards the destruction of the world.
D. Gray Man is one of my personal favorites for action anime. It is filled with uniquely created characters all of whom posses interesting different Anti-Akuma weapons. the only bad part of the D. Gray Man anime is that it caught up too fast with the manga and resorted to filler. It then was cancelled and filled with a quick ending. The manga is much better, however, I did enjoy the fillers in the series, just not the ending. What I personally enjoyed most about this anime was the sheer creativity in it. The story is fairly straight forward, you know, go and beat the big bad but it really draws you in with loveable and powerful characters.
Kenshin Himura is a loveable vagabond with a dark and bloody past as an assassin but a positive and cheerful outlook on life. In the 11th year of the Meiji Era, Kenshin finds himself in Tokyo. It is there he befriends a female kendo instructor, a former thief, a brawler, and a doctor. Each of his friends have a past riddled with secrets like Kenshin. Even though he is no longer an assassin, Kenshin cannot escape the blood he spilled. together with his friends he fights off the enemies of his dark past that constantly resurfaces.
Rurouni Kenshin is an old anime, but it is easily looked over by newer anime fans. It is forever a classic like Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop. This is a great anime for anime fans who are interested in Japanese history and action anime featuring samurais. Though Kenshin was never a samurai in the series, there are plenty to be found. Also, not everything in Rurouni kenshin is historically accurate either, but there are some names that you may recognize if you are a history buff.
These are just a few of the best selected from my personal anime library. If you have been fortunate to see all of these or have a specific sort of anime in mind, leave a comment. I can give more suggestions if you want them!
