Good Carbohydrates, Glucose on the Brain and The Essential Ingredient

By Edited Jun 11, 2015 0 0

For any healthy lifestyle, or unhealthy one for that matter, you need carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the essential ingredient in our diets, they are right up their with protein and fat. As with most things of course, there is bad carbohydrates and good carbohydrates.

What exactly are good carbohydrates though? After all, all of them good or bad have glucose in them which is brain fuel. Without it, our brains would not be able to operate correctly.

Most people have no clue though what a good carbohydrate and a bad carbohydrate. So this article will help you define that exactly. I like to end on a good note of course, so we will start with the bad ones first!

What Do Bad Carbohydrates Do?

Bad carbohydrates are incredibly refined and processed foods. Basically any food you microwave primarily could be considered a bad carbohydrate.

What they do is put your body on the fritz. After all it took us millions of years to evolve to eat what we eat, however it is only in the last hundred years or so that our bodies really have been exposed to these highly processed foods.

It causes all sorts of fluctuations in our bodies to allow these ingredients to enter our systems. Especially when it comes to insulin. This is a major reason why diabetes has been growing so rapdily in developed countries with processed foods, namely America!

Along with this, since it is so hard to break down these bad carbohydrates into energy, we tend to have our bodies just store them as fat. Most obese people have no idea this is what is really happening to them, most just believe it is because you are eating too many "fats".

(The two words, by this point you can guess, are totally unrelated!)

What Do Good Carbohydrates Do?

Where bad carbohydrates are highly processed, good carbohydrates are the exact opposite. They rarely go through any processing at all in fact. Often these type of foods will be in their natural state. For example green vegetables. Most experts agree these are probably the best carbs that you can actually eat for yourself because they are in genuine natural state and unaltered by man or machine.

Many diets include good carbohydrate foods because they help regule your insulin production and glycemic index.

Good carbs are also really high in fiber. By being high in fiber they help even more with people who want to lose weight due to fiber making me people feel more full, thus more satisified. Also these are high in nutrients such as phytonutrients that keep your body very strong.

They are converted to energy faster and are less often stored as fat. Here is a list to help you get a general idea of what kind of foods are out there should you want to incorporate this healthier approach to your normal eating habits.

Some Good Carbohydrate foods

  • Whole foods
  • Whole cereal grains
  • Beans
  • Legumes
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Whole fruit

Ultimately by you participating in your diet and getting rid of bad carbohydrates in place of good carbohydrates, you will find yourself losing weight, having more energy and feeling overall way better with yourself. Which, in the end is what we all want, right?
