Gouty arthritis is a disease provoked by a uric acid build up in the joints in the form of crystals. It can result in the swelling of the big toe or even the foot, which is very painful. Drugs are available for the treatment of gout attacks, but a proper diet that is low in purines (the elements that are converted into uric acid) diminishes the risk of suffering new attacks and improves the overall quality of life of the person. In particular, gout sufferers should avoid red meats, seafood (prawns, shrimp and scallops), asparagus, liver and herring among others. It is sometimes difficult to find recipes that are not boring and bland but conform to the doctor’s guidelines. These three are finger licking good!

Alhambra salad

Ingredients for 1 person:

  • A handful of rocket
  • 120g (1 cup) red lentils (drained)
  • Fresh goat cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • optional: some type of pasta if you’re feeling very hungry


  • thoroughly wash rocket
  • prepare dressing by mixing the lemon juice, the oil, the honey and salt & pepper – toss with the rocket (and pasta if desitred)
  • warm up the lentils in the microwave for an enhanced experience (the contrast of hot & cold makes it a lot more special)
  • add the lentils to the rest of the salad and sprinkle the goat’s cheese on top


Simple chicken noodles

Here are the ingredients for 2 people:

  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 leek
  • 2 chicken breasts
  • 2 individual packs of pre-cooked udon noodles


  • Finely dice the leek and peppers and keep in a bowl
  • Prepare the chicken breasts in chunks
  • Warm up the oil in a wok or pan
  • When hot, stir-fry the chicken until gold and set aside
  • Lower the heat to medium and add the leek and the peppers
  • Stir-fry for 5min (or to taste)
  • Add the udon and the chicken, mixing thoroughly to separate the noodles
  • Serve!

Pizza bianca

Ingredients for 1 pizza:

For the dough: check this recipe

For the toppings:

  • 2 cups part skim ricotta
  • 2 cloves garlic (chopped)
  • 2 cups skim mozzarella
  • ½ cup shredded fresh basil leaves


  • Prepare the dough as in here and extend the dough ball into a flat round pizza base.
  • Pierce it with a fork in different points. Sprinkle the oil over the dough
  • Blend the ricotta with the garlic and add some salt and pepper
  • Add the whole to the pizza base
  • Put the mozzarella on top and take to the oven (20 min or until crispy)
  • Decorate with a handful of basil leaves
