Goyard - Handbags, Wallets, and Malletier de Luxe

By Edited May 22, 2016 0 0

Goyard, one of the last few remaining French malletier de luxe, is know for their exquisite and impeccable leather goods. Officially know as La Maison Goyard, it is a world-famous French malletier, established in 1853 by François Goyard (1828-1890), then and still located on the rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, France.

In 1845, at the age of 17, Francois Goyard became an apprentice at Morel. Recently, More had acquired the esteemed Maison Martin Packing Case and Trunk maker to son Altesse Royale Madame La Duchesse De Berry - The stepdaughter of King Charles X and Mother to the heir to the throne - which established Morel as the most renown and respect company of its ilk within Paris. Monsieur Morel perceived Goyard as someone who was clearly capable of becoming his successor and so, after Morel's death in 1853, Francois duly became the heir to the company. Following on from this, labels placed inside the trunks proudly declared, "Goyard, Successeur de Monsieur Morel."

Following on from this, labels placed inside the trunks proudly declared, "Goyard, Successeur de Monsieur Morel." On October 11, 1853, Francois Goyard married a young courtier named Leopoldine Delaporte. Edmond, their son, was eventually born on the 11th of August, 1860, and would grow up at 233 Rue Saint-Honore - spending much of his childhood between the boutique and the apartment above, on the first floor. A second baby boy called Maurice, followed soon afterwards.

By the age of 25, Edmond took over from his father's role while Maurice became a jeweler on the Place de la Madeleine. La Maison Goyard was given the new name of E. Goyard Aine. The initial E not only acknowledges Edmond of course, but also paid homage to his grandfather, Edme Goyard, who died 6 years earlier.

Edmond Goyard decided to participate in the Exposition Universelle et International de Paris, in 1900, resulting in him winning the bronze medal. In 1906, in Milan, he subsequently garnered the gold medal, and by 1908, at the French-British Exposition in London, he was once more awarded gold. Edmond thereafter continued to win additional medals throughout the world.

By now, La Maison Goyard had become the favorite luggage-maker of the international set. Only individuals with the most discerning taste can fully appreciate the subtle and painstaking craftsmanship of each Goyard wallet or medium size Goyard handbag, tote, or briefcase.

The Goyard canvas of La Maison Goyard, like Louis Vuitton's, is symbolic, representing 3 chevrons, juxtaposed to form a Y. This Y evokes not only the name of the Maison itself, but also the tree, which symbolizes three centuries of the Goyard family history and their "Compagnon de Rivière" ancestors.

Customization is the name of the game with Goyard bags and Goyard totes and they can inscript anything you want on your Goyard bag, tote, wallet, or luggage. Most women buying Goyard handbags or totes add personalized stripes and initials. Most men get the classic black Goyard wallet or card holder.

Goyard has retail stores all over the world with most Barney's in the United States carrying Goyard. Paris, Beverly Hills, Boston, Hong Kong, Kyoto, London, New York City, Osaka, San Francisco, Sao Paolo, Seoul and Tokyo are the retail store cities. The atelier is located across the street from the retail store in Paris, on the Rue St Honore.

Goyard occupies a space in the ultra high-end accessory lines with the likes of Hermes and as a result, Goyard is one of the most expensive brands out there. Goyard wallets prices start at $550 depending on color and availability. Goyard handbags, such as the Goyard Saigon, start at around $2,000, depending on color and availability. The Goyard Saint Louis totes start at around $800, depending on color and size and availability.
