Graham Cracker Easy Pie Crust Recipe

By Edited Aug 18, 2014 3 4

Make Your Own Crust for a Delicious Cheesecake!

Graham crackers make a wonderful crust for many types of pies and cheesecake. It is easy, of course, to just run to the store and buy a ready-made pie crust in a tin foil pan. However, this doesn't work if you want to use your own pretty pie plate or cheesecake pan. Knowing how to make your own pie crust will allow you to be creative … and it is literally so easy that your children will be able to help you!

Graham Cracker Pie Crust

Ingredients for an Easy Graham Cracker Pie Crust

1 cup graham cracker crumbs

1/2 cup melted butter

1/4 cup granulated sugar

That's right … there are only three ingredients. In addition, the nice thing about this recipe is that these are ingredients which you may already have on hand. If you have a large pie plate, or you want an extra thick crust, you need only increase the ingredients proportionately. So, you can double everything or, if that is too much, just go with 1 1/2 cups of graham cracker crumbs, 3/4 cup melted butter and slightly over 1/3 cup of granulated sugar.

Make Your Own Graham Cracker Crumbs

The first thing you should know is that you can buy graham cracker crumbs in a box at the grocery store. But, don't look in the cookie or cracker section. Instead, you will usually find them somewhere in the area where they sell flour, corn meal, and similar products used in baking. If you want to make your own crumbs, however, here is how you would do it:

For one cup of crumbs, put 6 to 8 full size graham crackers into a large zip lock bag. Break the crackers up by hand into small pieces as you drop them into the bag. Seal the bag, but leave a small opening so air can escape. Finally, take a rolling pin and roll it over the bag until the crackers inside have been reduced to crumbs. Measure out the amount you need, and repeat the process with a few more crackers, if necessary. Kids will love to help your do this!

Mix the Crumbs, and Other Ingredients

Mix the three ingredients together in a mixing bowl, and stir thoroughly so that the butter and sugar coat all of the crumbs. While you are mixing the ingredients together, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Press the Pie Crust Mixture into Your Pan

Whether you are using a pie plate or a spring form pan for a cheesecake, you will need to press the graham cracker mixture into the pan. If you are planning a cheesecake, you will find that spring form pans make it much easier to lift the cheesecake free for a prettier appearance, as well as ease in cutting slices.  You can purchase a spring form pan from Amazon or other sites.

Whatever type of pan you decide to use, spread the crust mixture around and press firmly with your fingers and the palm of your hand until it is as smooth and firm as possible. Sometimes I take a small glass to use as a rolling pin as I smooth out the graham cracker crumb mixture.

Bake Your Pie Crust

Once you have spread the pie crust mixture onto the surface of the pan, pop your pan into the pre-heated oven and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and let it cool another 10 to 20 minutes. Now your crust is ready to be filled with either your cheesecake recipe, or whatever other pie filling you desire. Graham cracker pie crusts lend themselves well to being used for refrigerator pies that have a pudding filling … such as chocolate cream pudding pie, banana cream pudding pie, lemon cream pie, etc. They are also perfect for cheesecake, too!
