Top UK Fashion Designers

Best of British fashion depicted on postage stamps

The best of post-war British fashion has been captured in these superb images released on postage stamps. On the left is an outfit designed by Vivienne Westwood and the stylish outfit to the right is from the Zandra Rhodes design house.

Vivienne Westwood

The famous fashion guru Vivienne Westwood is best known for her punk fashion outfits and as the designer for the punk band called the Sex Pistols. She likes the patterns of traditional Scottish clothing, especially the tartans with the contrasting colors. The stamp image above shows a typical Scottish design.

In her early years she worked as a teacher but liked to design her own jewelry. Later on her designs became more outrageous, possible due to the punk influences. Her boutique is located at 430 King's Road, in a fashionable part of London, UK. The famous British fashion designer was born on 8 April 1941 and was the British Designer of the Year on three separate occasions.

Great British Fashion Stamps

The two ladies of fashion were honored in 2012 by Royal Mail who issued the postage stamps in their honor. The two stamps form part of a set of 10 stamps featuring top fashion designers since the war. The other 8 postage stamps feature designs by the crème de le crème of the great British Fashion industry.

Many of the others may be known to you as household names too. The image shows, from left to right (at the top), Norman Hartnell, Jean Muir, Ossie Clark and Alexander McQueen. And, at the bottom, we have Hardy Amies, Tommy Nutter, Granny Takes a Trip and Paul Smith. Both Sir Norman Hartnell and Sir Hardy Amies were knighted by the Queen of England for their services to fashion. Sir Harry (in 1977) was the first ever clothes designer to receive such an award.

Zandra Rhodes

The iconic designed Zandra Rhodes is known throughout the world for her amazing hair coloring as much as for her fashion sense. Sometimes she is seen with bright pink hair, bright green, bright red or a variation on any of these. There is no dispute however, on her effect on the international world of clothing and jewelry fashion. Zandra designed clothes for the Princess of Wales and Princess Diana was one of her greatest admirers.

If Zandra was not already established in the fashion world, then Lady Diana, by wearing her designs, certainly make a splash for her on the fashion map. Another fan who wore her outfits was Freddy Mercury of the band Queen. With two such high profile personaalities wearing your designs it is little wonder Zandra became as famous as the people she designed for. The much respected fashion designer was born on 19 September, 1940.

Fashionable Royal Mail

The UK’s postal authority of Great Britain, commemorated these 10 post-war British greats of the fashion world. The stamps are beautifully artistic and show the best known outfits of the respective design gurus. The postage stamp photographer, Solve Sundsbo, cleverly avoided the use of mannequins, but at first glance you do not notice that the clothes in each pose stand alone.

Royal Mail are to the forefront when designing postage stamps of quality and the postal services of the world, including the big names like USPS and Australia Post, will need to do something spectacular to meet the high standards set in the UK.

Great askformore, thank you. I bought this stamp set as soon as I saw them. They were issued in May 15 and the first day covers has a clever postmark in the shape of a large button.

Hi Introspective, thank you for the visit and vote of confidence. They are wonderfully artistic images of clothes that I cannot ever afford, but they are stunning stamps to collect.
