In 16th century, it was brought to Europe. It was Catherine of Braganza, the wife of Charles II, who made the habit of drinking tea in Europe very popular. It was considered as a luxurious drink at that time because it was only served during special occasions like weddings and religious ceremonies. It was only during the 19th century that drinking tea became an every day habit in all levels of society.
Among the types of tea, green tea is considered to be the healthiest since it is minimally processed, leaving behind all essential nutrients such as EGCG. EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate is known to be a powerful antioxidant that prevents certain kinds of cancer. It is also said to lower cholesterol in the blood and prevent the formation of blood clots. It is preferred by most people, thus making it the most consumed beverage all over the world, second to water.
