Green Tea Origin: How It Became The Most Popular Beverage All Over The World
Green tea consumption dates back thousands of years ago. Its popularity and potency as an herbal concoction is always top notch.  The origin of green tea can be traced back to China. Its popularity spread to other countries and continents as time went by. It is widely used all throughout Asia because of its health benefits.

Most people prefer drinking green tea at various special events like weddings, wakes, and tea ceremonies. It has become an indispensable part of some countries’ culture and tradition. In fact, green tea has taken the spotlight recently when it was found to be good at preventing certain cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, reducing the risks of certain cancers, and helping in shedding off unwanted pounds.

The origin of green tea stretches far and wide in Asia. It has long been used by many.  It is derived from the plant Camellia sinensis that thrive in most parts of Asia like India, Taiwan, China, Japan, Thailand and Korea. Only those that are picked from the leaves of Camellia sinensis are officially called tea.  The most common types of tea on shops are black, oolong, white and green tea.

Many people study the origin of green tea. Its preparation and benefits received attention from most parts of the world. The term green tea refers to the color of the final processed drink. The word tea originated from two words: te and cha. Cha is a Cantonese term that  spread to India through Portuguese trade with the Chinese. It later evolved into chai, as it was passed to the Persians and Russians. Te, on the other hand, spread to the Western European countries, where it developed to thee and later on to tea.

Green tea is closely associated with Japanese and Chinese tradition. It is mainly used to cure certain ailments such as headache and depression.

There is also a story behind this herbal concoction.  One interesting scenario revolves around a well-known scholar and herbalist named Shen Shung. He was boiling a pot of water under a tree when a strong breeze carried a bunch of leaves into the water. That accident resulted to a stimulating and invigorating brew that we now call green tea.

The history of green tea also points out that it was during the Qin dynasty that production of greem tea began. But it was during the Tang Dynasty that tea production and consumption are at their peak. It is within this time that tea spread to various parts of the world including Korea and Japan. In 16th century, it was brought to Europe. It was Catherine of Braganza, the wife of Charles II, who made the habit of drinking tea in Europe very popular. It was considered as a luxurious drink at that time because it was only served during special occasions like weddings and religious ceremonies. It was only during the 19th century that drinking tea became an every day habit in all levels of society.

Among the types of tea, green tea is considered to be the healthiest since it is minimally processed, leaving behind all essential nutrients such as EGCG. EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate is known to be a powerful antioxidant that prevents certain kinds of cancer. It is also said to lower cholesterol in the blood and prevent the formation of blood clots. It is preferred by most people, thus making it the most consumed beverage all over the world, second to water.

Green tea's origin is extensive and complicated; spreading across the world over a span of thousands of years, but the best thing about is that it is a good way to stay healthy. Why don’t you grab a cup now?
