We cannot deny that green tea and its benefits is widely known as health experts have conducted various studies and tests to prove this. Green tea in ancient time is mainly used to treat ailments such as headache, muscle pains and even depression. In Europe, it is a sign of luxury as it is only served during special occasions.

Aside from its soothing and revitalizing taste, it is used by many as one of their components in their weight loss program, others as part of their yoga practice. Here are some of the reasons why people are going gaga over green tea.

 

Weight loss promotion. One of the benefits of green tea is promoting weight loss. It contains polyphenol , a chemical known to dissolve triglycerides. It is normally stored in the liver but can also be found in other parts of the body. It decreases levels of fat oxidation, stimulates and speeds up metabolism. Also, another chemical released by green tea, EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate stimulate the release of fats to be used as energy. Green tea alone is not a guarantee to lose weight. It should be coupled with a good exercise program and healthy lifestyle.

Prevention of common cardiovascular diseases. EGCG lowers the level low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or more commonly known as “bad cholesterol”. Too much LDL in the bloodstream can lead to the formation of plaque, impeding the flow of blood resulting to heart attack and other diseases. EGCG promotes arterial function by improving blood vessels lining to withstand changes in the blood pressure. Aside from that, it prevents the synthesis of vitamin K which is necessary for blood clot formation which is responsible for heart attacks and cerebrovascular accident or stroke.

Decreases the risk of cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. A very powerful antioxidant, EGCG removes free radicals without harming normal and healthy cells and tissues in the body. It prevents certain kinds of cancer such esophageal, colon, breast and lung. Furthermore, it reduces the risk of skin cancer. Studies show that green tea applied topically reduces skin damage from the harmful rays of the sun. It improves skin elasticity and slows down the process of aging as evidenced by wrinkling and sagging of the skin.

Promotes calmness, alertness and focus.  L-theanine in green tea promotes relaxation and relieves stress. That is the reason why tea is used during yoga as it helps to attain a meditative state.  It also prevents depression.

Enhances immune system. Catechins, a naturally-occurring substance is thought to prevent and inhibit certain diseases.  Green tea has an anti-bacterial and anti-infective property that increases potency of antibiotics.

Aside from these, there are some studies being conducted to ascertain other benefits of green tea to the body. One study conducted on rats showed that EGCG prevents HIV to attack healthy T-cells. It is still being tested if it will have the same effect on humans.
