Ground Beef Is not Just for Hamburger Patties

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 4 13

Ground beef doesn't have to just be for hamburger patties.  There are many ways to cook ground beef.  In this article we will look at some various recipes using ground beef.

American Shepherd's pie is similar to the traditional shepherd's pie.  It takes about 20 minutes to prepare and 45 minutes to cook.

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef

8 oz. chopped mushrooms

1/2 cup chopped onion

2 cloves garlic, pressed or minced

1 tsp kosher salt

freshly ground pepper

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp flour

1/2 cup beef broth

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup frozen peas, unthawed

2 cups shredded hash browns

1/8 cup chopped chives

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

1/4 cup mayonnaise

sweet Hungarian paprika

Preheat oven to 375 F.  In a large skillet combine beef, mushrooms, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper to taste.  Saute, until most of the juices have evaporated.

Stir in Worcestershire sauce and flour.  Cook for one minute, stirring often.  Add broth, then heavy cream and stir.  Simmer until the mixture thickens.  Pour into a glass baking dish and let cool. Sprinkle peas over top of beef.

In mixing bowl combine hash browns, chives, 1 cup of cheddar cheese, salt, and mayonnaise.  Spread evenly over beef, and top with remaining cheddar cheese and paprika.

Bake for 45 minutes until cheese is melted.  Cool for about 15 minutes.

Burrito Casserole will serve about 6 to 8 people, takes 20 minutes to prep and 15 to cook.

Ingredients

8 flour tortillas

2 cups refried beans

2 tbsp canola oil

1/2 small red onion, diced

1  1/2 lb ground beef

1  1/2 cups salsa

1  1/2 cups cheddar cheese

1 minced jalapeño pepper

burrito casserole
Preheat oven to 350 F.  Cut 5 tortillas into strips, about 1/2" wide and set aside.  Line the bottom of a 9 x 13 dish with remaining tortillas.  Spread layer of refried beans over tortillas.

Heat canola oil in large skillet over medium high heat.  Add onion and beef and sauté for 5 minutes or until meat is no longer pink.  Stir in salsa.

Spread meat mixture over refried beans, sprinkle jalapeño on top.  Then add a layer of the tortilla strips and top with cheddar cheese.  Bake about ten minutes.

Sloppy Joe Pizza takes about 10 minutes to prepare, and 12 minutes to cook.

Ingredients

2 ten ounce cans refrigerated pizza dough

1 lb. ground beef

15 oz can of sloppy joe sauce

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Unroll pizza dough and place on 2 greased pizza pans.  Bake at 425 F for 6 to 7 minutes until golden brown.  Cook beef over medium heat in a large skillet.  Add sloppy joe sauce to meat and spread mixture over pizza crust.  Sprinkle top with cheeses and bake around 7 minutes until cheese is melted.

Hamburger Vegetable Soup

Ingredients

2 lbs. ground beef

2 cups chopped onion

2 cups peeled and sliced potatoes

2 cups sliced carrots

2 cups shredded cabbage

four 14.5 oz cans diced tomatoes

1/2 cup brown rice, uncooked

six to ten cups of water

2 tbsp salt

1/2 tsp basil

1/2 tsp thyme

2 bay leaves

Brown the beef and onion together until meat is no longer pink.  Drain off fat and add the rest of the ingredients.  Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for about two hours.  Check to see if water should be added.

Before serving, remove bay leaves.  This recipe makes about 18 to 20 cups of soup and can be stored in the refrigerator about four days.

Hobo Dinners are something that I grew up on, and my kids love today.  It's simple to make, and tastes so good.  The amount of ingredients you need will depend on how many people you are cooking for.

Ingredients

Ground Beef

Carrots

Onions

Potatoes

Salt & Pepper to taste

You will need Tin foil.

Preheat oven to 350 F.  Tear sections of tin foil into squares large enough to fold over a hamburger patty with toppings.  Pat out the hamburger patties and place each one on a section of foil.  Chop up carrots, onions, and potatoes and add to each patty.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Close tin foil, and bake in the oven for about one hour.  These are great right out of the oven, but my kids choose to eat it with ketchup.

Taco
Taco's are another way to cook ground beef, and is something most kids love.  There are a variety of ways to prepare taco's.  First decide if you want hard shells or soft shells.  Then brown the beef in a skillet until no longer pink and cook thoroughly.  Add taco seasoning to the meat and follow the directions on the package for how much water to add and how to cook.  When finished, place the meat into the shells.  Toppings depend on your preference, and include tomato, onion, bell pepper, jalapeño, sour cream, cheese, salsa, avocado, lettuce, beans, and sauce.

Superfast Salisbury Steak

Ingredients

3/4 lb ground turkey breast

3/4 lb ground beef

1/3 cup dry bread crumbs

2 large egg whites

cooking spray

3/4 cup water

3 tbsp tomato paste

2 tbsp Madeira wine or dry sherry

1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1/4 tsp ground black pepper

1  10.5 oz can condensed french onion soup

Combine turkey breast, ground beef, bread crumbs, and egg whites.  Divide meat into six equal portions, and shape into a 1/2" patty.  Heat large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium high heat.  Cook patties about six minutes or until browned, turning after three minutes.  Remove from pan and keep warm.  Stir in water and remaining ingredients.  Bring to boil and add patties.  Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for ten minutes.  Uncover and cook until wine mixture is down to about 3/4 a cup (about ten minutes).

However you may choose to cook ground beef, always be sure to cook thoroughly until the meat is no longer pink to avoid possible sickness.

Wow! I think I will try some of these recipes... The only thing I have been using ground beef for is pasta with meat sauce because, well, its a piece of cake. But I think I will try something new. Are these your recipes - from friends and family?
