Guacamole: More Than Just A Mexican Side Dish

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Guacamole is Versatile and Healthy

Guacamole is a versatile Mexican food side dish made from ripe avocados and typically served with tortilla chips or freshly cut vegetables.  But there are dozens of other variations in flavor and texture that can kick up this traditional fare and add another dimension to whatever you are serving. In this article we will consider several variations of guacamole and other ways to use this luscious avocado mixture.

Classic Guacamole Recipe
When selecting your avocado for this dish be sure it is soft but not mushy.  Slice off the ends and then peel off the skin lengthwise.  Any of the flesh remaining in the peel can be easily scooped out with a spoon.  You can either use a knife or a spoon to remove the avocado flesh from the stone.

Place the peeled avocado pieces in a bowl and add a splash of lime juice and some salt to taste. You can use a fork or a potato masher to combine all the ingredients. Consistency can be adjusted simply by adding diced avocado to the mixture or by not mashing the mixture too thoroughly.  Adjust seasonings to taste.

Spicy Guacamole Recipe
If you like it hot then you will love spicy guacamole.  To your avocado base add the following ingredients:  1 or 2 seeded, minced jalapeno peppers; 2/3 cup onion, finely chopped; fresh garlic, minced; salt to taste; 1/2 cup fresh vine-ripe or Roma tomatoes, diced; 2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped.  Add all ingredients to avocado base and mix well, chill and serve with tortilla chips, cut up vegetables, on tacos, or on top of burgers.

Roasted Guacamole Recipe
Adding some roasted ingredients will take this dish to yet another tasty level.  To your avocado mixture add roasted, husked corn kernels, cilantro and roasted red onion.  Kick it up yet another notch by adding cooked and diced bacon. Can be served with your favorite Mexican dishes.

Avocado is a very healthy vegetable containing 60% more potassium than a banana, and it is also high in fiber.  Color is the key to finding the perfectly ripened avocado.  When making a guacamole recipe, choose an avocado that is dark green to purple/black in color.
