All people both men and women and young and old have stretch marks. Stretch marks are reddish or purple colored scars that come from the rapid stretching of the skin. Stretch marks usually occur as a result of quick weight gain or loss or pregnancy.

They can be unsightly for some especially when the marks are a deep color and they can be difficult to get rid of. Stretch marks usually occur on the waist, stomach, thighs and buttocks areas of the body and genetics plays a part in whether or not you will have stretch marks. Likewise, people of a lighter complexion usually have more visible stretch marks than people of a darker complexion. Finding effective treatments for getting rid of stretch marks is possible.

Many people use a variety of natural remedies as a way of getting rid of stretch marks. Cocoa butter and shea butter products have been used by people particularly pregnant women to make the skin more supple, soft and pliable to ward off stretch marks. There are lines of commercial products that use these two substances as the active ingredients to prevent and assist in fading stretch marks. Also, drinking lots of water is said to prevent stretch marks and gradually decrease their appearance in combination with other treatments. It is also recommended that body lotions specifically with lightening agents be used on the affected area. Gradually the lightening agent will cause the stretch mark to disappear.

There are other options for getting rid of stretch marks that require use of creams that contain skin peeling ingredients. Two of the most popular stretch mark removing agents are AHA or alpha hxdroxy acids and Retin-A. Alpha hydroxy acids are plant based acids that are used in stretch mark removal creams to removal the top layers of skin to reduce the appearance of a scar such as a stretch mark. You can find many over the counter products that contain AHAs. Similarly, Retin-A is a cream based stretch mark remover except it is only available by prescription. Retin-A has been proven very effective in removing stretch marks but it is not a good option for pregnant women looking to reduce stretch marks as Retin-A can be passed through the breast milk to babies.

Finally, there are more minimally invasive procedures that are effective for getting rid of stretch marks. Laser surgery gradually fades stretch marks by using light to lighten the stretch marks over a number of treatments. There is also the option of dermabrasion. With dermabrasion the stretch marks are literally sanded away. Both the laser surgery and dermabrasion options can be quite painful for those with a low threshold for pain.

The results for getting rid of stretch marks using either laser surgery or dermabrasion are not immediate and usually require repeated treatments before results are noticed. Depending on the amount one is willing to pay, how much pain one is willing to endure and how quickly one wants results there are an array of options to consider when getting rid of stretch marks .
