Should I Buy a HX6972 or HX6992?
If you have been struggling to work out the differences between the HX6972 and the HX6992 -- then there is actually a very good reason for that: (deep breath) they are actually the exact same -- so in essence there is no real HX6972 Vs HX6992; as they are identical.
The reason why they have a different code (unique reference number), according to Philips is simply due to the fact that the HX6992 is (supposed) to be sold directly from dental practices and the HX6972 can be sold within retail stores etc. (a little more confusing, than helpful in my opinion - but there you have it). Hence, what you get in the box is the same, all the attachments and parts are also the same - the only real variation being... that you might order a HX6972 and instead a HX6992 arrives instead (which usually says 'professional', which just means it was to be sold through a dental practice).

A Brief Overview: The HX6972 & HX6992
So just to clarify neither model (HX6972 or HX6992) is anyway different (or better) than the other. For instance, they are both named -- the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Plus - designed to be a premium electrically (& rechargeable) powered toothbrush that offers you "complete oral care". They or it -- utilises sonic technology to offer an extensive clean to get rid of plaque right up along your gum line (clinically proven to improve your gum health within "only 2 weeks" through removing plaque & "simulating your gums").

They work by carefully (yet firmly) cleaning your teeth to prevent and remove 'inflammation' (deep in between the teeth as well as right along your gum line) - operating at up to 31,000 'movements per minute'. The brush also allows you to develop better dental cleaning habits through its easy start feature (which gradual introduces you to the sonicare technology over a 12 use period through gradually building in power) as well as a 'smart timer' & 'quad pacer' (which times you for a full 2 minutes, which is the required time recommended by dental professionals to get a decent clean, with a little beep every 30 seconds to indicate to move on to another quadrant of your mouth i.e upper-left, upper-right, lower-left & lower-right).
Moreover, you are able to select from a range of five different brushing modes to allow for a more 'personalized' (& customised) clean to help sort any immediate oral needs such as: gum care (for improving the health of your gums - the usual 2 mins, followed by a 1 min gum line treatment), massage mode (to fight plaque & stimulate the gums), clean mode (whole mouth cleaning & teeth whitening), Refresh mode (quick cleans e.g. after lunch) & finally sensitive mode (which is for those with particularly sensitive teeth). All information e.g. what mode you are on -- is provided through the illuminated display that shows once it is turned on, & then turns invisible again once you turn it offer (pretty cool).
It also comes with uniquely designed brush heads that have contoured to the shape of your teeth to maximise both comfort as well as maximize the results in removing plaque for even cleaner teeth. You also get a UV brush head sanitizer all acts as a all-in-one station for charging, storing and killing bacteria with a ultraviolet light sanitizer (killing 99% of bacteria and viruses that are found on the brush head). This is the factor that gives you the dentist 'like' clean every time.
The Flexcare+ is very, very well regarded with over 1,000 + reviews scoring it an average of 4.4 stars (sourced from Amazon.com) which can be summarised with comments like "my check ups are much better after using this" from Jase and "embarrassed I ever used a regular (manual) toothbrush by Aileen being a commonality amongst reviews.
