Hair Implants

Many people nowadays suffer from excessive hair loss that can be treated successfully with hair implant. Male pattern baldness is the most common form of excessive hair loss that we are familiar with but the prevalence of female pattern baldness is also alarmingly high. In both Male and female pattern baldness, there is a genetic weakness associated with the hair follicles at the balding area. The hair follicles are weak against the attacks from dihydrotestosterone (DHT) resulting in hair loss. Most men lose their hair along the hair line or the top of the head but women generally lose their hair all around the head.

The How of Hair Implants

Hair implant is a surgical process whereby a surgeon is to harvest the hair follicles from the area where the loss of hair has not occurred thus proving them to be healthy and strong against dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The problem is not with the area of the head but with the genetic programming of the hair follicles at the affected area so when healthy follicles are transplanted, they are able to thrive as they had at the donor area. The actual process of hair implant takes a whole day but it is not an inpatient surgery.

The Pros v. Cons

It seems that the benefits of the hair implants far outweigh the downsides. It is an outpatient process that uses local anesthesia and causes minimal discomfort so you can return to normal activities the same day without having to take time off from your normal daily routines. Hair implants are unlike wigs or hair plugs in that they are truly your own hair and you can treat it as such. You can swim after hair implants but the healing process must take place for at least 1 to 4 months for the growth of the hair to resume at normal rate. Thousands of hair follicles have to be harvested from the healthy area to the area affected by hair loss. So even though the cost per graft runs about $3-$10, it is misleading to think in those terms. The cost of the hair implants can run from about $3,000 to $80,000 when taking into account the sheer number of grafts that must be implanted to achieve that natural look so it can seem prohibitively high to some. There is some risk of infection or numbness after hair transplant but it does not seem to be a major issue.

If you decide that Hair implant is the right choice for you, make sure you find the best surgeon possible for the procedure to have your questions answered and receive the best care possible. This is definitely one area where you don't want to skim and look for a bargain. If you want the hair implant done right, resulting in a natural looking hair line and full growth after the surgery, you must seek the best qualified physician. Hair Implant can potentially be a life-changing procedure restoring self-confidence rather than just a cosmetic procedure. You need to take charge in making your hair implant a success.
