Much of this information is generated by the American Hair Loss Association.  Web MD cites them, and the Bald Truth is coordinated by the AHLA president.

Sorry guys, the odds are not in our favor.

  • Most people lose between 50 to 100 hairs a day[2]
  • 50% of men will start to lose hair at age 30[1]
  • 67% by age 35[2]
  • 85% at age 50[2]
  • 95% of male pattern baldness is hereditary, and contrary to what many think, you can inherit this from either your mother's or father's side of the family. [5]

As for the other causes of hair loss, the guilty parties include....[5]

  • Severe physical or emotional stress
  • Medication
  • Damage to the scalp
  • Diseases
  • Poor Nutrition

But do not lose faith, there is hope!

  • 70% of men who use Rogaine (minoxidil) will see favorable results[2]
  • Up to 90% of men who use Propecia (finasteride) see a slow down in the rate of hair loss[2]

*BEWARE: If you stop using your prevention treatment, the baldness will come back faster*

Hair Transplants (surgical and non) are also very effective, as long as you do your research.

More than 70% of nonsurgical hair loss consumers are unhappy with the quality, service, and price provided by their hair replacement salons, according to research conducted by the American Hair Loss Association.[4]

In hair transplant surgery thousand of hairs are transplanted.

It may only take one or two treatments, each one lasting between 5 and 10 hours

Other interesting tidbits

Hair Loss Prevention Manufacturing is a $7 billion dollar industry[6]

As of 2008 each hair transplant session will cost $9,000 on average.[9]
Propecia is $55 a month/$660 a year - side effects in less than 2%.  If you use it for 50 years, not accounting for inflation or time value of money, you'll spend $33,000 to defy nature.
Minoxidil is $20 a month/$240 a year.  Fifty years of use will total $12,000.

Women prefer men with a full head of hair

In one experiment (a pretty poorly set up one) women were 5 times more likely to show interest in a guy with full hair vs. thinning hair.[7]
