Hair Restoration Choices
Once you have decided to do something about your hair loss the next step is to determine what hair restoration method you will use. Treatment results vary with the different products and procedures that are available. Determining which of the many options is best for your situation will require an understanding of what is available.
There are many hair restoration products on the market today. The most effective ones contain either Finasteride or Minoxidil which are the two drugs that have been approved by the FDA for hair loss treatment. Finasteride, normally marketed as Propecia, is taken orally in table form. This drug is not safe for female hair loss because it has the potential to cause birth defects. Minoxidil, usually marketed as Rogaine but now found in generic form, is applied to the scalp to assist in stopping hair loss and improving hair growth. Minoxidil is safe for both men and women.
Another hair restoration choice is to purchase a hair replacement system. You probably know these by there old names of Toupee or hair piece. New technologies have made hair systems almost completely unnoticeable and you can even use them for a hair line that is swept back. New attachment processes have made the old problem of the toupee falling off at the wrong time a thing of the past. You can now be comfortable with your system in a hurricane.
A third choice is to have a cosmetic surgeon transplant your own hair onto the bald spot. This hair transplantation method is very popular and the results are absolutely amazing. The surgeon removes hair follicle and shaft units from a part of your body with good hair growth, usually the back of the head, and then inserts these units into the scalp at the bald spot. Within a few weeks the transplanted hair bonds with the nutritional systems of the scalp and begin to manufacture new hair shaft material. These can continue to produce good hair growth for twenty years.
Each of these methods have their pluses and minuses. Hair restoration prices are usually one of the deciding factors. The thing to consider is not only the cost today but also the cost for using the particular hair replacement method for the next twenty years.
