When people go in for a hair transplant, they are usually thinking mostly about the expected results they'll have. But this is a huge mistake. You are setting yourself up for disappointment by focussing only on the benefits and not on any disadvantages the treatment might have. It is more realistic to keep in mind that you might indeed suffer from a number of side effects after having had a hair transplant. Most people do, and there's no reason to assume you're going to be an exception. Hair transplants are an invasive surgery. And as with any surgery, there will have to be a period of healing and resting aftwards.

Shortly after you have had a hair transplant, you will notice that your new hairs falling out after about a week or two. This is normal and it is called shock loss. But the thing is, your surrounding hairs (the ones that haven't been transplanted) might also fall out. This is just one of many hair transplant side effects you can get. It might scare you at first. You'll think to yourself that you have gone to the hair transplant clinic for more hair, but ended up with less! No worries though. This is only temporary and the hairs will likely grow back. A few months after this, your hair follicles will enter the anagen phase again, which means they're going to produce hair again.

You might also get a swelling of your scalp, your eyes and your forehead right after the treatment. This is also a temporary condition that's certainly not going to last more than a week. The doctor can give you medication that will help you deal with the swelling as long as it lasts.

Often, your scalp will become a little itchy in the days following your hair transplant surgery. This is to be expected, because the tiny recipient wounds where you hairs have been implanted, will start forming scabs. It's important that you don't start scratching these violently, as this could possibly damage your new hairs. Leave your new hairs to heal in peace!

It's possible for you to develop infections after your hair transplant. This is rare, but it does happen on occasion. You should take this problem very seriously, because if it gets out of hand you're going to have a much bigger problem on your hands. Your doctor can provide you with antibiotics to help deal with any infections. But prevention is better than curing. So keep the scar clean and treat it the way your performing doctor advises you to.
