The fishtail braid has become one of the season’s most must-try hairstyles. Whether purposely messy or perfectly neat, the unique look and texture of this hair-do will give your style a boost. Experiment with different braid-styles, including the traditional 3-strand weave or the even easier 2-strand braid. Also use a variety of accessories, including tropical flowers, rhinestone barrettes, or even satin or silk ribbons to add a hint of color. Learn how to create a fishtail pony hairstyle at home with just a few tools.

Step 1: Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle and smooth hair. Apply a detangling product or smoothing serum as needed to make hair easier to handle. Divide the hair into two even sections, beginning at the middle of the head.

Step 2: Start on the right side of the head with the right section of hair. Grab a small section of hair (about ¼-inch) with your ring and pinky fingers. Fold this section of hair over to the left side to add it to the left section.

Step 3: Repeat the same motion on the left side. Remove a small section of hair from the left side of the head and transfer it over to join the right section. Ensure that you hold the sections firmly to get a tight braid.

Step 4: Continue the weaving motion, going back and forth from the right and left sections. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you may need to weave in more or less strands.

Step 5: Secure the end of the braid with a small elastic band. Use your hands to gently loosen the braid if it feels too tight. Add accessories to the hairstyle at this time if desired, or leave it as is. Apply a spritz of hairspray to hold the hair in place.

Fishtail pony hairstyles have become a highly chic style, often seen on celebrities like Cher Lloyd, Kate Mara, Demi Moore, and Jessica Szohr. The best part about it is its super easy to do; only taking about fifteen minutes from start to finish. Fishtail braids also work great with second-day hair. It can actually be beneficial as the hair isn’t slippery as you are trying to weave it. Add hair products like texturizing spray to add volume and texture to your fishtail braid hairstyle, especially if you have naturally thin hair. This hairstyle can be accomplished on all hair types, including straight, wavy, and curly.
