Halloween Decorating Ideas and Tips

By | Oct 5, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Children, especially, look forward to the spooky Halloween season, and most of them enjoy helping their parents decorate. No matter whether the theme is scary or whimsical, there are unlimited options when it comes to Halloween; and half the fun is choosing the right ones. So here are a few Halloween decorating ideas to consider this October.

Carved jack-o-lanterns fit well inside or outside of homes. Scattered on tables throughout the house or arranged in groups inside the fireplace, they add an organic, eco-friendly touch. Outside, they are welcoming on either side of the front door or in a line by the walkway. While traditionally they have been lit from within with candles, the new flameless tea candles offer an inexpensive and safe alternative to open flames.

Fake spider webs, another cheap Halloween decoration available almost anywhere, is a longstanding classic. Since a single package will create several webs, they can be hung everywhere from chandeliers and lamps to dark corners. Outside, they give a natural look hanging from the light by the front door or strung across shrubbery. To complete the look of a haunted house, they can be glued in most any strategic location. One of the keys to using webs successfully is to stretch them so that they are thin enough to look real. Stretched thinly inside a haunted house they often will not be seen until bumped into which can make for some spooky entertainment for everyone.

A good way to set the mood for any occasion is the use of special lighting, and Halloween is no exception. Strings of orange or white lights wrapped around stairway railing or windows are playful and charming. Novelty lights covered plastic covers and shaped like black cats, ghosts, and pumpkins are available at local party stores, and replacing the porch light with a black bulb creates an eerie effect.

As yard décor becomes more popular, manufacturers have responded with huge inflatable designs for the Halloween season. With a choice of giant ghosts, tombstones, pumpkins, spiders, and more, there is something for everybody. For a more natural look, however, bales of hay, cornstalks, and scarecrows are timeless solutions. To add a little extra ambience, a hidden recording of spooky sounds near the front door gives guests an unexpected greeting.

With a lot of imagination and a little money, almost anyone can come up with creative and enchanting ways to celebrate the Halloween season. In addition to all kinds of new decorations to consider, there are plenty of adorable vintage decorations that you can pick up as well, that will add a special flair to your holiday decor. Happy decorating!
