Hamster Care

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Having a pet hamster of your very own can be one of the great joys of pet ownership. It's possible to just sit and let the hours melt away watching the industrious little hamster scamper about it's cage. Endless enjoyment can be had observing them as they explore the various tube mazes many hamster cages provide. Or perhaps a more interactive game is your style, and the use of a hamster ball is your favorite way of enjoying your furry little friends. No matter the reason for having a hamster, proper hamster care is important to the continued health and happiness of these inquisitive little rodents.

Caring for Your Pet Hamster

Hamster care begins with the selection of a proper hamster cage for your new pet. Hamsters are mainly subterranean in the wild, and modern hamster cages are built to closely emulate this lifestyle. To facilitate this, many hamster cages feature a series of hard, clear plastic tubes for the hamster to explore. These tubes are a great way to keep your hamster entertained as well as provide it with valuable exercise. When selecting a hamster cage, make sure it's the right size for your breed of hamster, and has enough variation to keep your hamster entertained. Also consider placing a hamster home within your hamster cage for your pet hamster to sleep in. Since hamsters live underground in the wild, they feel more comfortable sleeping in an enclosed area. providing such an area will greatly reduce your hamsters stress level.

Hamster toys are also very important to consider when thinking about caring for your hamster. Hamster toys such as the hamster ball and hamster wheel are a great source of entertainment, and also an incredible source of exercise as well. Not to mention the enjoyment you, the owner, will get out of watching your little hamster motor across the floor in it's ball, or scamper along in it's wheel. Other hamster toys also serve to help keep hamster's teeth healthy, such as hamster chew toys.

Providing the right diet for your hamster is also critical to it's continued health and happiness. In the wild, hamsters survive on mainly fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, and other edible plant matter. However hamsters are also known to be omnivorous, and will eat small insects and worms. When feeding your pet hamster, it's recommended that you use a store bought, special made hamster feed. But that doesn't mean you can't give them treats of fresh fruits and vegetables as well!
