Hand powered or gas powered leaf collectors

By | Apr 13, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Automated leaf collectors are a great piece of gardening equipment and can save you hours of time and handful of blisters. Regularly collecting up the leaves from you lawn during the autumn months will prevent a suffocating layer building up on your lawn and stopping the air getting to it, resulting in a brow patchy lawn come the spring.

Leaf collectors - or lawn sweeper's as they are sometimes known - come in two different varieties hand powered and gas powered, your situation will best determine which sort is best for you.

Hand Powered leaf collectors

Hand powered lawn sweepers are great for the environment, they are also great for you to and here's why:

Hand powered lawn sweeper uses no power other than that which comes from you and therefore is very environmentally friendly and very green way of collecting the leaves from your lawn quickly and efficiently. It is great that you could also provide you with a little bit of a workout which in a world where we are becoming less and less active cannot be a bad thing. If you have a big garden though and not a lot of time then a hand powered lawn sweeper may not be the ideal solution you as it can be quite time consuming.

Gas powered leaf collectors

If you've got a large lawn or physically unable to use a hand powered lawn sweeper in a gas powered sweeper may be the only option for you. This doesn't have to be a bad thing but they are certainly not good for the environment as the hand powered sweeper would be. There are certain advantages of having a gas powered lawn sweeper as some of them will feature shredders which shred and compress the leaves and consequently take up less space. Shredded leaves are also much better to add to leaf mould pile as they will break down much quicker than if you add them to a pile intact.

A gas powered leaf sweeper will also be much quicker to use and if as I mentioned above has a shredder built in you'll have to empty the hopper far less often than the hand powered variety.

If at all possible I'd always urge you to go hand powered lawn sweeper because it is far better for the environment in terms of actually running it and also in terms of the number of components and manufacturing processes. But I appreciate that this is not always possible, so if you do have to buy a gas powered lawn sweeper read up on the company you're buying it from to check their green credentials first.
