Handmade Card Making Glues and Adhesives
Handmade card making glues and adhesives are important in
making greeting cards that will last. If you take the time, effort,
and creativity to create a one-of-a-kind greeting card, then you should
take a few minutes to figure out which glues and adhesives would work
to keep your handmade keepsake all in one piece. Here is a breakdown
of the most popular glues and adhesives for card making creative
projects:
Double-sided Tape
This is one of the most easiest
and least messy ways to attach paper on paper when making greeting
cards. Aim for getting permanent double sided tape, often found in the
scrapbooking section of a craft store, because it is extra, extra
sticky.
Hot Glue Gun
A hot glue gun is often used for
attaching large embellishments such as flowers, buttons, and bows.
This type of glue should only be used for attaching embellishments, it
does not work well when attaching paper to paper because it may leave
bumps, burn the paper, and otherwise be disastrous.
Rubber Cement
Rubber
cement is a thick type of glue that dries clear. It is applied using a
stiff bristled brush and can become messy. Rubber cement is better for
larger paper projects that require a lot of glue to be spread over a
large area quickly. Although rubber cement is said to be a permanent
type of adhesive it eventually loses its bond after a few years. This
type of glue would not advisable when working with kids as it can get
messy and the smell may become overwhelming if used for long periods of
time.
Glue Stick / Colored Glue Stick
Glue sticks are ideal
for working with kids because of the easy clean up and minimal mess (if
the kids are supervised). There are colored glue sticks that make it
even more fun for kids to create their own handmade cards. Glue sticks
do not lend to the most permanent type of bond, but it works for little
projects and are definitely kid-friendly.
White Clear Drying Glue
White
glue is one of the most common types of glues used for crafting, think
Elmers Glue or Tacky Glue. They are secure types of glue and even work
well with smaller embellishments as they are clear drying.
Spray On Adhesive
Spray
on adhesive is not typically used for handmade card crafting, but can
work if you are adding fabric or other delicate pieces to your card and
are weary of getting bumps in your final project. For large surface
areas, spray on adhesive can be an ideal choice.
