Harry Potter Toy Shopping: 3 Mistakes To Avoid

By | Nov 9, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

If you or your children are caught up in the Harry Potter craze, you may be considering purchasing a toy from the huge range. As there are so many to choose from, here are a few hints on buying the right ones.

Don't pay too much for the older Harry Potter Lego sets

The large Harry Potter Lego sets of Hogwarts Express and Hogwarts Castle are large scale, bring the stories to life and offer hours of fun for any fan. They have been around for a few years but given they are relevant for each new book and film, they do not age. They have, however, become harder to find and so can command a ridiculous price. If buying from Amazon Marketplace sellers, you can expect to pay a few hundred pounds but if you search around, particularly on Ebay, you should be able to pick up a set for more of a bargain price of around £100 for the Castle and a lot less for the Express. These sets are well worth having if you can get good value for money. They are both over 400 piece sets where you can build either the engine, carriage and Platform 9 ¾ or four rooms in the famous castle. Both offer great role play experiences and have many features such as secret compartments or trap doors. The attention to detail given by the Lego designers is amazing and these sets would become showpieces in your home.

Do not buy the wrong Harry Potter board game

There are a variety of Harry Potter board games to choose from and all of them are very good. However, they vary greatly in the Harry Potter knowledge you need to be able to play them. If you haven't read every single page in the book 10 times then do not buy the Trivia game. Here you need to live and breathe Harry Potter to answer the questions and collect the charm cards. They are some easier questions for less experienced players though as well as multiple choice options if needed. Conversely if you want your other family members to know you know more about Harry Potter than they do, do not buy the Mystery Of Hogwarts game. This is just a Cluedo style game where you have to work out who committed the crime, where they carried out the act and which spell they used. This game is great for some Harry Potter fun and has plenty of twists to keep the game interesting, but it does not require detailed knowledge.

Do not miss out on the role play accessories

The top Harry Potter toys are predominantly made up of Lego sets and board games but for younger fans, role play accessories are often a better choice. The Deluxe Robe comes in sizes small, medium and large and can be worn by both boys and girls. The material used has a really nice feel to it and it is not too heavy. To complement the look try the Interactive Wand which has a light up tip and makes sounds that give the impression of some great spell conjuring going on. If dressing up isn't for you, there are also lots of Harry Potter figures to choose from and create magical scenes with. There are many of the popular characters available in various sizes.

So do not be fooled into thinking any Harry Potter toy will do the trick - excuse the pun! Do a bit of research and avoid making the mistakes detailed above. If you already own the Harry Potter toys discussed in this article, perhaps consider some other currently popular toys for boys such as Ben 10 toys and Transformers 2 toys.
