Health: Dangerous Mold Allergy Symptoms May Seem Like a Cold

By Edited Jun 19, 2016 1 8

Allergies to Mold

Allergies to Mold can affect people of all ages. Some symptoms seem like that of the common cold or flu.

Mold is found almost everywhere in the world. In particular, mold spores are even in the fresh air that we breathe in every day. A fungus or mold spore when discharged into the air is similar to the way that pollen releases from our flowers and plants when disturbed. If you brush up against plants or disturb the leaves when raking the yard, it will release the spores into the air, causing the same allergic symptom result.[2]

Mould growing in our homes

Where Does Mold Grow?

Mold can grow inside or outside the home on sheds, or any rotting wood or among the rocks, and leaves in the back yard. Most people will associate mold with growing in our bathrooms. We notice it mainly in the corners or base of our shower recess, on the tiles, or on the shower curtains. It will grow even in the walls of your home if; they are continually wet or damp. Although, there are many more places where mold grows, for instance:

  • In our pillows
  • In Refrigerator or icebox doors or lids
  • Under the kitchen sink
  • Around the rim of a washing machine
  • Rubbish bins and carpets
  • In bathroom and shower
  • Brick walls

Allergic to Penicillin

It is hard to understand how mold can cause so many different types of allergies to people of any age. You are more at risk if either of your parents suffers from mold allergies. As my father is allergic to Penicillin, he is more susceptible to having an allergic reaction to mold. If you are allergic to penicillin there is another reason of concern.

How often have you seen the green mold on cheese? Most people cut the affected area off and eat the rest. However, if you are allergic to penicillin, this is another form of penicillin - and the simple act of cutting off the green affected area is not enough, as the cheese will still have penicillin in the cheese and this will still be enough to cause an allergic reaction.

Many mold sufferers believe they are suffering from a simple cold when in fact it is an allergy to mold causing the flu-like symptoms.

Symptoms of Mold

Mold spores normally attach themselves to the lining of our nose, which then causes the various allergy symptoms. The most common and noticeable symptoms from mold are a runny nose, watery and itchy red eyes, hives, headaches, sinus, and difficulty in breathing.

The toxic mold Symptoms could cause, dizziness, nausea, anaemia, rashes on your skin, memory loss, difficulty in breathing, and the more serious cases could result in death.

Avoid the Risks of Mold Growing in Your Home

There are many ways to help avoid the risk of mold contamination, especially in your home. Reduce the amount of dampness by drying your floors and never store damp clothes in cupboards. Install proper air vents in the bathroom, toilet, and kitchen above the stove. Open doors and windows where possible to allow natural ventilation.

Repair dripping taps and remove plugs from sinks, which in turn will prevent the leaky tap from overflowing into and under the cupboards. Most sink cupboards when built from chipboard, will expand when wet and hold the water. Make sure the steam from your electric kettle is not causing a build-up of moisture if operated under the top wall cupboard on your kitchen countertop, as the vapours will collect under there.

When cleaning the bathroom use mold inhibitors on your bathroom tiles. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in every room of your home, especially during the more humid months of the year when the mold grows. If you are, one of the people affected by mold, wear a mask to avoid any contamination.[1]

Shower Water Deflectors- encourage mold

The plastic water deflector that fits on the bottom of your show also encourages mold to grow.  Pull these off and treat and clean every couple of weeks.

Who is More Likely to Have a Mold Allergy?

People in many different occupations suffer from exposure to mold allergies. They may work in factories, farms, orchards, or plant nurseries. Food fungi may cause a reaction in some people.

Do not take any risks, if you have any doubts about what is causing your allergy, contact your doctor. He will decide whether you need to have a skin test done to verify what type of allergy you have.

How to Remove Algae or Mold

Moisture during the winter or cooler months will encourage mold or algae to grow in our homes.  If spores are very heavy, try removing the worst with a paint scraper and stiff brush.

Then use a fungicide solution (available in most supermarkets). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on container, and apply with stiff brush to remove.  Treat again when or if it returns.

To stay Healthy in your home during the winter months make sure you maintain proper humidity

A very good point you make! Mould can be deadly to some people and it is hard to detect. Vitamin C is good for cleaning it off kitchen surfaces, especially inside the fridge. White vinegar or bleach also get rid of mould.
Perhaps the vitamin C we take if we feel a cold is coming on is as you say, an attack of mould.

Thanks Yindee, you have some good ideas. It is also great to see that you spell mold the same way I have always done. I had to change it to mold to get this published. The English language is so annoying, different spellings even in English speaking countries.

Olive leaf kills mould and mold! Yes, then we have colour and color to add to the shades of the English/ American spellathon.

Oops! We seem to all have multiple entry problems. Press the submit button once. Then chill out and wait. Every time you punch the button you will repeat yourself. (How did I find that out!)

Yes Yindee, it is a pain, but at least now we are able to delete the whole thread, which is great. It looked so awful with all those on here. Now they are gone, I hope.

I have just been writing about the common cold. I linked my article to this one on mould because a mould can bring on a cold if an adenovirus has already taken hold. Thanks for this contribution, Sharon.

Thanks Yindee, I will do likewise, because it is something that some people are still unaware of this even today.
