Health Insurance for Individuals
Beginning the Search for Health Insurance for Individuals
Though finding health insurance for individuals can be a daunting task, there is some information that can help you find the best and most affordable coverage available. Most people will receive some form of health insurance coverage through their employer. However, some smaller businesses cannot afford this and do not offer coverage. Other people who are self employed or unemployed have to find coverage from a different source as well. One option is Medicaid, which helps people who cannot afford health insurance.
There are many people who do not have health insurance, but do not qualify for Medicaid, and these people have to search for individual health insurance. Purchasing this type of health insurance can be difficult because the provider will take a close look at your individual health history and problems, if you have any.
When you are searching for affordable health insurance, you need to remember a few things. First, go ahead and tell them everything, and do not try to hide health problems or history from the provider. If and when they find them, they can rescind your coverage even if you have already paid premiums.
Second, know your options. One option for individuals is short term health insurance. This kind of insurance is designed to help those people who need coverage for a short period of time. This includes people who are looking for work, recent graduates, and part-time employees for example. This coverage usually ranges from one month to six months, and it helps people make transitions without having to worry about having a major medical emergency during a transition period. This is not meant to be used for day-to-day health coverage.
If you are self-employed or planning on becoming self-employed in the future, there are some things you should know about self employed health insurance. The most important is a law that was enacted in 1986, and it is called the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986, or COBRA. With COBRA, if you weren't fired and the company that you are currently working for has more than twenty employees, you can continue your current health coverage for up to eighteen months after leaving the company. This means that your coverage will not change for the first year and a half. After that the self-employed will need to purchase individual health insurance. Nonetheless, COBRA will help give individuals time to find a new provider or coverage plan.
If you are searching for health insurance, you are not alone, and there is large number of people and resources that can help you find what you need. Though it is generally difficult to find health insurance for individuals, there are options available for you.

Health insurance for individuals has become a luxury that some people just could not afford any more. It is great to know that you get options like MedicAid that help people who would otherwise had to risk going without health insurance. And I agree, rather be honest about your history. Actually I believe any person should be truthful in anything. Off course people that lie don't go to heaven :-) One may get away with a cheaper premium when you lie about your medical history, but if they find out, they will refuse any payouts and cancel your contract.
