Healthier Food Options At Chain Restaurants

By Edited Apr 19, 2016 1 0

Put Down That Burger!

Every time that you read about food from chain restaurants it is usually because they are really bad for you. We are not here to say that every option in the menu is a healthy one because the truth is that a lot of them give you more calories than you should have in one day. There are options for you if you are on a diet, and they are not always the choices that you would make. You do not have to stick to a salad without dressing to make a great choice when you go out to eat, so check these options from popular menus.

Atlanta Bread Company’s New England Clam Chowder

So if you have done your research on creams then you already know that New England Clam Chowder is not all that great for you. We are not here to dispute those claims, but we can tell you that as far as calorie content goes, the one from the Atlanta Bread Company makes a lot of sense. The 1 ¼ cup size has only 190 calories which is almost unheard of for a clam chowder. The reason they can lower the number of calories is because instead of using mostly cream, they use milk which helps a lot.

As far as quality goes, it is not what you usually get, but that is because they are giving you something that is a better if you are trying to lose weight. The one thing that we do not like is the sodium content which is 1,240 mg, so if you have high blood pressure stay away. Use this soup to satisfy your craving if you ever want New England clam chowder.

Chipotle’s Steak Burrito Bowl

Here is a surprising entry. There are foods that are better in the number of calories that you get, but few pack as much flavor. The calorie content is not really as high as some may think with 495 of them. The bowl has only 11.5 grams of the bad stuff (fat) and 42 grams of protein. Because you are getting a bowl and not burritos you are also taking away the flour tortilla which is a better option.

Your steak burrito bowl includes the beef, rice, beans, cheese, guacamole, salsa and sour cream. If you can hold off the sour cream then you are really doing a lot better with one of these bowls than you would with most salads from fast food chains, some even without the dressing.

Burger King’s Single Stacker

Just because you are on a diet, it does not mean that you should avoid every burger in the fast food menu. Some like the BK Single Stacker can really be a better choice. The reason this burger is better is because it is flame broiled and does not have a lot of the bad stuff. The single stacker has 370 calories and 21 grams of fat, but only 8 of it is actually saturated fat. Keep in mind that just because the burger is not so bad it does not mean that you should supersize it. If you can avoid fries and soft drink you will be a lot better off. Another good choice at Burger King is the veggie burger (without the cheese and the mayo) which has only 320 calories.

California Pizza Kitchen’s Sesame Ginger Chicken Dumplings

You will not get a lot of things in the California Pizza Kitchen menu that are that great for your diet, and sodium content is still something to look out for. The Sesame Ginger Chicken Dumplings from California Pizza Kitchen are however a bit better than the rest and they taste great. They have 1 gram of saturated fat, and 465 calories, which is amazing, but the sodium really does scare us. The sodium content is 1,801 mg, but as long as you do not make it an everyday thing you will be fine. Avoid if you have high blood pressure.

Dairy Queen’s All-Beef Chili Dog

By now you are probably seeing the trend that with low-calorie count you can also get a lot of sodium. That is also the case with the Dairy Queen’s All-Beef Chili Dog, but with a name like that you probably would expect something a lot worse than what it is. This “hot-dog” is not the best choice for nutritional content, but compared to most burger options at fast food chains it makes for a better decision. Since there are Dairy Queens open all over the country it makes it easier to head there for one of these than to your closer fast food restaurant when you feel hungry. With this chili-dog you will get only 330 calories and 20 grams of fat. You should not go on a chili-dog diet, but you can quickly satisfy your cravings with it.

Denny’s Fit Slam

If you go through the doors of a Denny’s you should not expect to have a lot of healthy options. Just looking at the Denny’s All-American Slam gives us chest pains, but they do have a couple of options for breakfast. The best one is the Denny’s Fit Slam. This meal will not leave you feeling hungry and as big as it is, it only has 390 calories and 12 grams of fat. Compare that to the All-American Slam which has 1280 Calories and 93 grams of the bad stuff and you see why it is the better choice.

The fit slam gives you egg whites, spinach, an English muffin, turkey bacon and fresh fruit. This breakfast is really one of the better options and it comes from a place famous for their diet-destroying meals.

Boston Market’s Skinless Chicken, Corn And Garlicky Lemon Spinach

Chicken is good for you, really good. The problem that it can give to your diet happens when you eat skin and fatty parts. You want to have the chicken breast and to get rid of the skin; Boston market can do that for you. By getting a skin-less breast with garlicky lemon spinach and corn you are getting a meal that is surprisingly not that bad and very filling. You can replace the corn with mashed potatoes and you are only getting to 630 calories. If you are taking fewer calories in your other meals then you will have an easy way to lose weight and not sabotage yourself when you go out.
