Summer is just around the corner. While students are excited to get a three month break from school, parents should be aware of their child's eating habits. This will help reduce the child's chances of obesity and make them nutritionally conscious. There are certain foods that children and adults alike should try to cut back on. While ice-cream and pizza sounds like a great meal for kids, excessive intake of fatty foods can be a recipe for disaster. That's why it's so important for children to understand that there are healthy snack options available in the summer.

Healthy summer snack options

From oranges to broccoli, strawberry’s, and lettuce, there are plenty of healthy snack options for children in the summer. Listed below are some of the most popular snack options for kids in the summer.

  • Pineapples
  • Oranges
  • Watermelon
  • Homemade Smoothies
  • Banana Bites
  • Grapes
  • Carrots and ranch (optional)
  • Baby Carrots
  • Yogurt
  • String Cheese

It's okay to have a hamburger or slice of pizza here and there, but it should not be an everyday occurrence. Try only providing these types of foods for your child following a soccer game or other activity, in which your child just burned hundreds of calories.

How to get your children to eat those snacks?

It's great to know those healthy snacks options but how do you get your children to eat them knowing that many children don't like eating their fruits and vegetables. We just need to be creative with them.

  • For example, you can reward your child with 15 minutes worth of play time if they eat all the fruits or vegetables on their plate.
  • Setting an example as a parent will help reinforce the importance of these types of foods. They may be thinking to themselves, “why do I have to eat this if you don't? Whatever you do, make sure you are always setting a good example for your child, by eating healthy snacks, especially in the summer.
  • Kids certainly have unique imaginations. We often find our little ones hiding in nooks and crannies or playing some type of role playing game with peers. Try thinking like your child, if you want them to eat healthy snacks in the summer. Play a game with him or her and reward them with slices of orange or pineapple. This will help them associate the healthy snack foods with an activity they enjoy.

When you are looking at healthy snack options for children during the summer, it's just as important to find healthy drink options for your child. With a sky rocketing obesity rate among kids throughout the US, it's no wonder why the governement has taken such a firm stance on nutrition guidelines, especially in schools. Try replacing pop with water or fruit juice. It is important for parents to review the nutritional information found on food and drink packages. Make sure that you buy 100 percent juice, as oppose to a juice cocktail. You will that this is a much healthier alternative for your child and it tastes better too!
