There are few things more frustrating to pet owners than seeing their dog suffering from constant itching and scratching, yet having no clue how to stop the dog from itching. Dogs itch and scratch at their skin for numerous reasons. The most common reasons are due to their diet, overall health, and environment. Once you know exactly what is causing your dog to itch and scratch, you can go about finding an effective solution for the problem.


A dog's daily diet plays a pivotal role in the condition of its skin, and also gives the observant dog owner clues on what can be done to stop the dog from itching. Many commercial big-chain brands of dog food are actually not healthy for the dog, nor do they often provide an adequate nutritional value to the dog's diet. A dog's itchy skin may be a result of food allergies, for example. Tracing food allergies can be difficult, so one alternative to help stop your dog's itching may be to gradually switch the dog over to a premium brand of dog food. You can also incorporate raw food to help control the dog's skin itching.


Another important thing to consider when trying to stop you dog from itching is the dog's general health. Dogs with environmental allergies, or more complicated health issues may be more at risk for skin irritation and itching. Itchy skin in dogs can also be caused by demodectic mange. Mange is most often seen in very young or old dogs, and dogs with compromised immune systems. If you suspect your dog's skin itching is caused by mange, you should have the dog evaluated by a veterinarian. You may want to supplement the dog's food with brewer's yeast and fish oil to help boost its immune system. If fleas are causing the dog to itch, brewer's yeast may also actually help deter and prevent them from taking up residence on the dog!


Lastly, a dog's itching skin may be caused by environmental irritants such as household sprays, cleaners, shampoos, and household plants. In this case, the easiest and fastest way to help keep the dog from itching is so cease the use of these irritating products. There are many natural products that can be used to disinfect and clean the household. These product may help stop the dog from itching, while also being healthier for the entire family and the environment.
