The ability to make a compound angle cut is one of the most important things that you will need if you are a woodworker. Inevitably you will find yourself in a position is which you need to make a compound angle cut. There are a few options available to make this possible but the easiest by far is to use the Hitachi C10FSB 10-Inch Sliding Dual Compound Miter Saw. A compound miter saw is a circular saw that allows you to lock in both the bevel and angle that you want to cut, making it very easy to get an accurate cut.

A miter saw should allow you to cut angles of up to 45 degrees in either direction, however some of the top of the line saws like the Hitachi C10FSB now allow you to go slightly beyond 45 degrees in at least one direction. This makes the saw more versatile and can certainly allow you to get your work done more quickly. Things that you want to look for when considering a miter saw include a miter gauge that is both easy to read and easy to adjust. You also want to make sure that it has hard stops at the angles that you will cut most commonly. You should also be able to lock in any angle that you need to cut.

It should probably not come as a surprise to learn that the difference between a standard miter saw and a compound miter saw is that a compound miter saw can cut compound angles. That is it can cut both angles and bevels at the same time. A compound miter saw will allow you to tilt the saw up to 45 degrees in at least one direction in order to cut bevels. The better quality saws will allow you to tilt them in both directions. The ability to cut bevels in both directions will certainly allow you to work faster and is usually a good investment.

There are three common blade sizes for compound miter saws, 8, 10, or 12 inches, price to tends to increase as you get larger. A 12 inch blade is the most useful saw since it will allow you to cut through almost any size piece of wood that you encounter, unfortunately you are going to have to pay for this flexibility. The cheapest option is the 8 inch compound miter saw, however this is usually false economy. You will likely find that an 8 inch saw is too small for most jobs and wish you had a larger saw. The Hitachi C10FSB 10-Inch Sliding Dual Compound Miter Saw falls in the middle and is usually sufficient for the home woodworker, although the professional carpenter will likely find a 12 inch model a better investment.

There are a couple of other features that are optional, but that are so useful that most saws now have them. These are a slide and a laser. A sliding compound miter saw will allow you to cut larger pieces of wood since you can pull it through the wood. The laser makes it very easy to line up your cut and make sure that you are making an accurate cut. These are very good options that you should definitely consider, most good quality compound miter saws now have them as standard features.
