HIV Symptoms In Women

Generally men are infected more with HIV than women, but there is an increase in the number of new cases of HIV in women and it is believed women with HIV will surpass men in the near future. HIV symptoms in women are similar to those in men, but there are differing symptoms.

One of the most common HIV symptoms in women is vaginal infections. Women who are infected with HIV often have reoccurring vaginal infections which include abnormal pap smears, genital warts or ulcers and yeast infections. Yeast infections cause dryness, burning and itching of the vagina.

Another common symptom is Bacterial vaginosis also known as BV. Bacterial vaginosis is a condition where bacteria grows in excess amounts inside the vagina. BV is similar to a yeast infection because it too causes burning, itching and dryness of the vagina, but in BV there may also be a discharge in the vagina.

Pelvic inflammatory disease or DIP is another symptom women show when they are infected with HIV. DIP causes the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries to become inflamed. There are not any visible symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease, but this disease does cause damage to internal organs.

An abnormal menstrual cycle or having no period at all are also common HIV symptoms in women. Symptoms can also include missed periods, spotting between periods, heaving bleeding or very little bleeding.

Swollen lymph glands are also a common sign that women may be infected with HIV. The glands in the neck, armpits and groin area become swollen because they are trying to help rid the body of the infection.

Weight loss and intestinal issues such as loss of appetite and diarrhea are also common HIV symptoms in women. Women who are infected with HIV will lose weight very quickly without explanation and when they are not dieting.

Flu like symptoms which include sore throat, body aches, fatigue and fever are other common symptoms that women display when they become infected with HIV.

Women with HIV are very susceptible to other sexually transmitted diseases such as genital herpes, gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Typically these diseases include symptoms such as nausea, fever, and pain in the lower abdomen and pain in the lower back.

In addition to the above mentioned HIV symptoms in woman, woman can display a variety of other symptoms such as lack of energy, tiredness, severe fatigue, headache, night sweats, pain when swallowing, skin rashes or flaky skin, white spots or blemishes in the mouth and short term memory loss.
