Home dog training is something that every dog owner needs to know how to do. When you first get a puppy, the excitement and love that you feel for him sometimes overpowers the urge to train your dog properly. This can be OK for a time, but once your dog begins to grow, it's not so easy to control him.
You will have to be able to teach your dog a few simple commands so that he will learn to do what you tell him. It's not impossible to actually teach your dog at home. There is no need for you to send your dog to an expensive obedience school, when you can teach your dog some simple good behaviors at home.
You will need to start training your dog as soon as you bring him home. If he is a puppy, this is perfect. If he is a fully grown dog, it may take him a little bit longer to learn what you are teaching him. Begin following this step by step program for home dog training to teach your dog some simple commands.
- Find some treats that your dog will love. You can try out a few different treats until you find one that he really likes.
- Start by choosing a few simple commands for your dog to learn. Sit, stay and down are great commands to start with. "Sit" is usually the first command that someone teaches their dog and it might be the one that you want to start with. Once you have learned the process of teaching your dog a command, you can teach him any command that you like.
- Show your dog that you have a treat in your hand and say the command word. Then you will need to show the dog the meaning of the command word. If the word is "sit", you might press lightly on his behind so that he will know what to do. As soon as he sits down, give him the treat and praise him by saying "good boy".
- Repeat this process over and over until your dog sits on command. You can then begin to teach him other commands and tricks.
Use a treat that is mild and good for the dog's stomach. When you are home dog training, you will be giving your dog lots of these treats and you don't want him to get sick.
Always use the same command word. If you vary the word, your dog will never learn what to do.
Be patient. Dog training takes time and when you lose patience and become agitated, your dog will not want to work with you. Try to remain calm at all times.
