Home Remedies For a Cold

Who wants to leave home when cold or flu symptoms are settling in? Luckily many home remedies for a cold are already available so leaving to purchase a remedy isn't necessary. A remedy is a correction of sorts. In the cold/flu arena it is more of a symptom reliever until the virus passes on.

WATER
Water is very useful as a cold/flu remedy. Take a hot shower until the last 2 minutes. Then turn on the cold water. Research has shown that this reduces the amount of colds in people from those who just took hot showers. It also improves circulation which improves the flow of white blood cells, which valiantly fight infection!

A nice soak in a hot bath, with Epsom salts, lavender, or not, relaxes the suffering patient, and helps clean the body toxins from a cold fever sweat.

Sipping hot water with a bit of honey, cayenne, ginger or lemon juice or a tea (echinacea, ginger, sage, elderberry) is a terrific remedy.

Boil a bowlful of water and then add some cayenne or ginger to it. Put your head over it and put a towel over your head forming a tent. Inhale an let the steam seep into your nostrils and on your skin. It makes for an unstuffy head and relieves any runny nose colds too.

BLANKET
Surely your home has a blanket. Hopefully it is heavy and warm because you need it to curl up in and close your eyes and rest. Anything similar, like a sleeping bag, or even a clean warm rug can be used to stay warm, ease the chills, and stimulate rest. A bed to lay on helps, too, or a couch will do nicely.

If you have an electric blanket, use it. Turn it on from 20 minutes onward (depending on the Hi or Low temperature setting used) to warm up the sleeping area. Then turn it off before you climb in to a toasty, comfy relaxing rest area. This diminishes harmful EMF's (electromagnetic fields), and cancels any chance of fire from the electric blanket.

Staying covered and warm is good for both cold and flu remedies.

GARLIC
This is the one time you want garlic breath! Peel and chop a whole clove garlic. Swallow it, then suck on a lemon rind (or not). Get the garlic swallowed 3 or 4 times a day to fight the common cold.

If you don't have garlic at home (gasp), you could use garlic powder, basil (Holy basil is excellent), cumin powder, or onion powder. You might want to mix the alternative in a spoonful of honey and swallow it. A clove garlic is the best though.

NASAL IRRIGATION
This may sound weary and cumbersome to do, but it isn't. If you have a Neti Pot, then use it. If not, here are the directions to clean irritated nasal passages, delete congestion, and reduce inflammation from a runny nose. A tried and true remedy.

  1. Mix ½ tsp of salt and ½ cup of warm water in a cup.
  2. If the cup doesn't have a spout, use a paper cup and bend the lip of it to make a spout.
  3. Stand over a sink. Tilt your head back and to the left. Open your mouth and slowly pour the solution into your right nostril. The solution will drain out of your left nostril. Keeping your mouth open will keep the solution from flowing down your throat.
  4. Repeat the mix and refill the cup. Follow the directions for the other nostril (tilt your head back and to the right)).
  5. Gently blow your nose afterwards to help clesr out any remaining solution.


Do this daily until the congestion is gone (often it only takes one time).

Most importantly, rest your aching body, stay warm, and drink plenty of fluids.

Good ideas for help with colds. I have found that if I get a sore throat I take 1 only (red and white for night or green and white for day) cold and flue capsule. And have not had a cold for 3 years now. I had pneumonia once and don't want it again.
So it does work for me anyway.

I hope you don't ever get pneumonia again either. Sore throats can be tricky-glad your capsules work for you. Thanks for commenting.
