Home Therapies for That Dizzy Feeling Called Vertigo

By Edited May 5, 2016 0 0

Vertigo is described as a sensation of the room whirling or tilting.  This sensation can cause a loss of balance and the feeling of being dizzy.  Some people experience vertigo when they are ill and others experience it when feeling well because there may be some problem with the inner ear.  The feeling of being dizzy and off balance is often the symptom of many different maladies such as inner ear infections; migraines; specific diseases and even allergies.  At times vertigo and lightheadedness can even occur upon standing and changing positions.  There are some home remedies that can assist in the relief of dizziness.

At times, rising too fast from a horizontal position can lead to a short-term drop in blood pressure because of a momentary decrease in the blood flow to the brain.  The easiest way to solve this problem is to slow down when changing positions, allowing the blood vessels the time to adapt to the new position.

If the feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness occurs, find a focal point on a stationary object and concentrate on it.  This technique of visual focusing assists the brain in locating an anchor in order to regain the balance it needs to overcome the vertigo.  If this sensation of dizziness occurs when traveling in a car or boat, try utilizing this technique by focusing on far away scenery or on the horizon.

There are times when a person’s breathing pattern can lead to that dizzy feeling.  This often occurs when a person holds their breath for a long period of time.  Holding the breath in this manner leads to an increased concentration level of carbon dioxide in the body’s system which can lead to lightheadedness.  On the other hand, when you breathe too quickly, otherwise known as hyperventilation, this leads to expelling more carbon dioxide than normally causing vertigo.  If this happens, just slow the breathing down and take slow, deep breathes until the dizzy feeling passes.

At times, vertigo may be felt when playing video games.  These games have a three-dimensional effect that can cause a person to feel lightheaded.  If this occurs, stop playing the game and take a break.  Utilize the technique of focusing on a stationary object until the vertigo passes.

Vertigo can also be triggered by a salt imbalance in the body.  This type of situation most often occurs during the warm summer months when the body perspires more than normal.  If this occurs, try snacking on a salty food, such as pretzels or potato chips.  Relief usually occurs once the body’s salt levels have become stable.
