Homemade Face Mask Recipes

Homemade face masks are relatively cheap and easy to make. Using face masks can improve your complexion by encouraging waste-elimination, boosting local blood circulation, neutralizing bacteria, closing pores and trapping surface moisture.

Fuller's Earth Facial Mask (suitable for any skin type):

1 tbsp of Fuller's Earth
1 1/2 to 2 tbsp of rosewater (for medium-to-oily skin) or small amount of rich face lotion (for dry skin)

Mix the ingredients together and apply using a beauty brush with natural bristles. If using rosewater in the mask, place thin slices of cucumber (peeled) on top during application to keep it moist. After 10 minutes remove the mask using warm rosewater.

Turmeric and Egg Feed (nourishes tired and/or dry-to-normal skin):

1 egg yolk
2 tsp of turmeric
2 tsp of brewer's yeast
2 tsp of pollen grains
2 dessert-spoons of jojoba essence rosewater (to blend)

Use a whisk to beat the egg yolk. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix in. Although this face mask is simple to apply it is quite sticky, so sponge it off carefully. It leaves skin beautifully smooth.

Cucumber and Clay Tonic (good for normal-to-oily skin):

2 in (5 cm) piece of cucumber
4 tsp of green clay
2 tsp of brewer's yeast
Use a blender to combine the ingredients until smooth.

If the mixture is a bit watery, add 1 to 2 tsp of extra clay.

Avocado and Honey Mask (nourishes dry, aging skin):

1/4 avocado (ripe)
1 tsp of runny honey
2 tsp of live Greek yogurt
2 drops of rose otto or jasmine essence

Thoroughly mash the avocado using a fork. Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Apply the mask to the face quite thickly. Leave it on for a minimum of 10 minutes. Wipe it off using dry muslin cloth. Rinse the muslin in warm water and then use it to remove any mask residue. This is a rich mask, so using a rosewater toner to refresh your skin afterward is a good idea.

Egg Firming Mask (short-term anti-aging effect):

1 egg white
4 to 6 tsp of kelp powder
1 drop of geranium essence

Whip the egg lightly until it is white and bubbly (not stiff). Mix in the other ingredients thoroughly. Smooth the mask over your face thinly. Wait for the mask to dry thoroughly. Wipe it off and then rinse your face.

Tips:

When applying face masks, ensure the skin is clean first and ex-foliate if necessary. Massage face masks methodically into the face, avoiding areas around the lips and eyes. Apply face masks using upward and outward motions.

Add an evening primrose or borage oil capsule to your homemade face masks. These kill free radicals and will give the masks an anti-aging edge. After using your face masks, apply a toner for a complete treatment. Flower waters like rose or orange are ideal.
