It is hot and it is summer, and you or your kids are looking for some cool treats. This is when you can offer them your homemade frozen ice treats. These are tasty but at the same time a healthier choice than many other overly sweet options. This way you get a refreshing treat and some extra vitamin C and fiber.

Here are a few quick recipes for your treats. The only extras you need are some molds which you can purchase online or simply use ice cube trays. You can buy these from the local dollar store or discount department store. You can find many shapes and sizes, your choice!

Frozen Chocolate Treat

Stir one teaspoon of sweetened cocoa or chocolate milk mix into one cup of plain yogurt (brand of your choice) Mix well and pour into the molds and freeze. You can adjust the chocolate to taste, and you could also blend in some raspberries for some added texture. But quite often, kids don't like chunky things in their treats! So this would be an option that maybe you would like (That is one way to make them your own!)


You can mix one cup of vanilla yogurt with one cup of any fruit and throw it in the blender, then pour into your molds and you have great tasting frosty cold snacks, or in this case frozen yogurt treats, homemade!

You can also add chopped mint chips, or chocolate chips

If you would prefer something more refreshing with no yogurt in it, just something really cold and great tasting and natural, then take fresh fruit such as raspberries or strawberries, blueberries, any fruit you like, and add one tablespoon of lemon juice to two cups of your blended fruit mixture and then freeze (lemon juice stops fruit from discoloring, and adds a bit of zing)

These make a great refreshing treat for those hot days.

The frozen yogurt mixtures make a great dessert option for kids too. You can experiment with any of the above, and they are fun to make.

If you don't have any of the above ingredients, then you can simply freeze juices for a great homemade snack. Orange juice works well, but you can also make a batch of lemonade, especially the pink and then freeze it into the ice molds.

If you don't own any ice molds, then you can use ice cube trays as well. Just put a pop sickle stick in each one and then freeze. These are great for smaller children and are refreshing and thirst quenching.

You don't have to buy the prepared frozen pop sickles, you can make your own, as long as you have a freezer. Just use your imagination, you can make a different tasting homemade ice treat each time, depending on what fruit is in season.

So get out to the local markets for fresh fruit, get out your blender and enjoy summer, and make your own homemade frozen ice snacks!
