Homemade Granola Bar Recipe
Baking your own granola bars at home will allow you to have complete control of the ingredients and create healthy treats to suit your personal nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, many homemade granola bar recipes render dry, hard and tasteless bars which pale in comparison to their store bought counterparts. You can create healthy granola bars that are high on flavor with this simple recipe. Best of all, you can customize the recipe with chocolate chips or dried fruit of your choice.
Ingredients:
2 cups old fashioned oats
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup wheat germ
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 cup dried fruit
1/2 cup honey
1 egg
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 tsp. vanilla extract
Step One
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees before you begin mixing together the ingredients for your granola bars.
Step Two
Mix together two cups old fashioned oats, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup wheat germ, 3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon, 1/2 cup all purpose flour and 1/2 cup whole wheat flour in a large mixing bowl.
Step Three
Stir 3/4 cup of dried fruit such as cranberries or raisins into the dry ingredients. You can also use chocolate chips, nuts or a combination of all three.
Step Four
Form a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
Step Five
Pour 1/2 cup honey, one egg, 1/2 cup vegetable oil and 2 tsp. vanilla extract into the well in the center of the bowl.
Step Six
Mix the ingredients together with a wooden spoon until mixing becomes difficult. Use your hands to finish blending all of the ingredients together.
Step Seven
Spread the granola bar mixture into a 13 x 9 inch pan sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Pat the mixture down evenly.
Step Eight
Bake the granola bars in your hot oven for 20 to 30 minutes. Cooking time may vary from one oven to another so keep an eye on the granola bars. When the edges are just golden brown, the bars are done.
Step Nine
Remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool for five minutes.
Step Ten
Cut the granola bars into servings of your desired size while the bars are still warm. If you allow the bars to cool completely, they may break apart when you attempt to cut them.
