Since I’m a fan of cruising, friends often ask me what I do when I vacation at Homestead Resort in Virginia. They’ll say:  “It’s not like the hotel can move, like a cruise ship can.” My answer’s always the same:  “There are plenty of activities, and the only question is, what season is it?”

This luxury retreat offers a bevy of activities, which celebrates the fun and magic of each of the Old Dominion’s lovely four seasons. Homestead Resort in Virginia isn’t just a hotel for families, or for couples, or for business functions and weddings. No, it’s for everything, and everyone, and every season of the year.

Or, tour the retreat property by hiking or taking a hayride. Or, gather your honey, and take an old-fashioned carriage ride.

When winter blows in, you can go hiking and biking (weather permitting), ice-skating, skeet shooting, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and snow tubing.

Jefferson Pools

Jefferson Pools is the name of the hot geothermal springs, for which Homestead Resort in Virginia is world-renowned. There exists a bathing/soaking area for women and a separate one for men.

The “Gentlemen's Pool House,” a simple wood building, still in use today, was constructed in 1761. A few of its most eminent ‘soakers,’ in addition to George Washington, have been Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.

The “Ladies' Pool House,” also of wooden construction, was erected in 1836. Mrs. Robert E. Lee, wife of the famous Confederate general, was a fan of these hot springs.

In Closing

As an avid cruiser, a vacation at the land based, Homestead Resort in Virginia, is no less exciting, despite its stationary status. While you’re not sailing to three separate port stops in one week, you’re staying in one spot, savoring the majesty of that one spot.

A land based vacation at a luxury spot, like Homestead Resort in Virginia, versus a cruising vacation? I enjoy both. One isn’t better than the other, and they each fulfill, very well, their separate needs.

Fabulous article! One of our daughters went to Washington & Lee University, nearby, and took skiing lessons at the Homestead. Then, during her senior year of college, she met her husband there. We are very fond of the Homestead!
